Formula 1 continues to grow as one of the biggest sports on the planet, with the thrill of watching the world’s fastest drivers in incredible cars do battle, exhilarating for all. Having first taken place back in 1950, as a sport, Formula 1 has evolved hugely over the past 70 years, with the impact of technology and global infrastructure completely revolutionising the sport.
As the Formula 1 circuit heads towards 2023, the sport remains as relevant in the eyes of the public as it ever has been, thanks in the main to the fly-on-the-wall Netflix documentary, that has given fans a unique look behind the veil at one of the world’s most unique sports. With financial backing seemingly not going away and the popularity of Formula 1 continuing to soar, associated markets and industries are beginning to take hold in their pursuit of the F1 bandwagon.
Betting on Formula 1 is by no means a new concept, with the basic premise of backing a driver to finish first in a given race hardly a new one. That said, online sports betting has boomed in popularity over the past few years and the number of Formula 1 betting markets now available to punters is bigger than it ever has been before. New and existing betting customers are seeing Formula 1 as a viable sports betting option and F1 fans can enjoy many free bet offers no deposit and other betting offers, across a range of Formula 1 betting markets.
With the 2023 Formula 1 season on the horizon, here is a rundown of what punters can expect heading into the new campaign:
2022: The Year of Max Verstappen
Heading into the 2022 season, the controversial way in which Max Verstappen and Red Bull clinched the 2021 World Championship in Abu Dhabi, was dominating column inches the world over. However, in a relatively short space of time, Max Verstappen was able to put all of the conjecture behind him and steam roll his way to a 2nd consecutive F1 World Championship title in 2022.
The Dutchman came into the campaign engrossed in a battle with Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton but with no sustained challenge mounted from the 7-time world champion Hamilton, Verstappen was able to breeze ahead in the championship race. Similarly, Ferrari looked to have their house in order with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr but once again, their title bid faded, with driver and team errors proving costly.
Consequently, it was Max Verstappen who demolished the field in front of him, winning 14 of the races on the Formula 1 calendar, to assert himself as the undisputed number one driver in Formula 1 currently. Whilst 2023 is of course a new season and there will be many hurdles to overcome along the way, Max Verstappen is currently standing alone at the top of the Formula 1 driver’s pyramid, and he looks to have the beating of those around him.
What Will the 2023 F1 Season Hold?
The nature of Max Verstappen’s dominant F1 World Championship victory in 2022 is surely only going to ignite even more of a fire within the bellies of the chasing pack. Mercedes has shown real resilience in the 2022 season, with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton both plucking away until the final race and they will believe that they are putting the building blocks in place to challenge Verstappen.
Elsewhere, Verstappen’s Red Bull team mate Sergio Perez surely won’t continue to settle for playing second fiddle and should he start finding form, he could be a very tough man to stop. Ferrari showed real glimpses of their quality in 2022, with both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr winning races but their lack of consistency was their undoing. Moving into 2023, they will be desperate to get things right at Ferrari and once they start ticking, they can be very dangerous.
Elsewhere, the likes of McLaren look well equipped once more in 2023, with Lando Norris heading up their charge, whilst the decision of Pierre Gasly to join Alpine is representative of their ambitions heading into the new season.
Whilst Max Verstappen will once again be the hot favourite in 2023, he is unlikely to have things all his own way to such an extent in the new season and there will be plenty of drivers and teams in the chasing pack, looking to haul Verstappen back down to earth.
