Ferrari is gearing up to make significant changes to the SF-26 Power Unit, aiming to reduce the performance deficit to Mercedes as the 2026 Formula 1 season resumes after the April break. The Scuderia intends to use the ADUO update, reportedly already approved by the FIA, to address existing engine issues and reclaim lost ground on the reigning front-runners.
What the ADUO update could bring to the SF-26
According to technical insights from F1 analyst and journalist Zander Arcari, Ferrari engineers are targeting several areas of improvement to maximize the SF-26’s output. The team is expected to revise the design of the combustion chamber, enhancing efficiency and improving power delivery under race conditions. This redesign is intended to optimize fuel burn and thermal efficiency, giving Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc a more responsive and powerful internal combustion engine.
In addition to mechanical upgrades, Ferrari is focusing on the hybrid system. The energy management software is set for an overhaul, introducing a new algorithm to better regulate energy deployment and recovery. This should allow the SF-26 to deliver more consistent power while reducing losses during both qualifying laps and long-race stints.
The championship implications
Ferrari’s objective with the ADUO upgrade is to regain a substantial portion of the roughly twenty-five horsepower that currently separates the team from Mercedes. According to team principal Frédéric Vasseur, successfully implementing these improvements could mark the start of a “new championship” phase, with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc ready to fight at the front once more. The update is expected to be a decisive step in closing the gap on both Mercedes and other rivals in the 2026 Formula 1 campaign.
As the season progresses toward the Miami Grand Prix, Ferrari’s engineers are under pressure to translate these technical changes into on-track performance, ensuring that Hamilton and Leclerc have a more competitive SF-26 capable of challenging for wins and podiums.
