Scuderia Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur has a positive outlook on the Maranello team’s performance at the Canadian Grand Prix last weekend.
The French manager is pleased with how the weekend went overall, despite a troublesome Saturday for Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal. In any case, in Maranello, they seem to have understood the SF-23 better, which, for the first time this year, managed to make a set of medium tires last for a large number of laps, demonstrating good pace in the race.
Speaking to Sky Sport F1, the French team principal doesn’t hide his smile. “Since Friday, we’ve had good form, with a competitive pace both in single-lap performance and race simulation. Yesterday was much more difficult with the challenging conditions. We started from 10th and 11th positions, which was a bit frustrating for us, but today we had a great comeback. The pace was good, the strategy was good, we decided to keep them out in clean air to do some laps with clear track and push,” the Frenchman said.
Is there a chance of victory?
Italian F1 journalist Federica Masolin then asked about the impressions after the qualifying session in Montreal, whether there was regret for Charles Leclerc, who failed to make it to Q3, and for Carlos Sainz’s who received a three-place grid penalty for Sunday’s event.

“Regret is not the right word,” Fred Vasseur replied. “We have to try to correct the mistakes we made, and we will discuss it on Tuesday. It was important yesterday to close that chapter by focusing on the race and trying to salvage the situation. But it will also be a good lesson looking ahead to Austria. Hopefully, we can be in a similar condition there, and we need to have a perfect weekend to achieve the best result.” – Frederic Vasseur pointed out in his interview for Sky Sport Italy.
The word then went to Marc Gene, who asked about the big step forward made by the SF-23 car, as it seemed to struggle in Spain but revived in Canada.
“I don’t think we found something in the car; we are improving step by step. Now we have to focus on the next Grand Prix, bring the updates, and we need to put everything together to try and have a mistake-free weekend,” stated the Frenchman. And with such progress, is there a chance of victory? “I don’t want to talk about it,” Frederic Vasseur admitted.
