Lewis Hamilton explains Ferrari breakthrough after career-best weekend with the Scuderia
Lewis Hamilton delivered his most convincing performance yet since joining Ferrari, converting a highly competitive weekend into a second-place finish at the Canadian Grand Prix and offering fresh optimism for the Scuderia’s 2026 Formula 1 campaign.
The seven-time world champion looked transformed throughout the Montreal weekend. From practice sessions to qualifying and race pace, Lewis Hamilton consistently appeared far more comfortable with the Ferrari SF-26 than in previous rounds. His ability to challenge at the front and engage in an intense on-track battle with Max Verstappen suggested that Ferrari may finally be beginning to unlock a more competitive operating window.
Perhaps most importantly, Lewis Hamilton later explained that this performance was not accidental. Behind the scenes, Ferrari made meaningful changes to both setup philosophy and working methods, helping the British driver extract a level of confidence from the car that had previously been missing.
A completely different picture compared to Charles Leclerc’s difficult weekend
While Lewis Hamilton enjoyed his strongest Ferrari showing so far, the other side of the garage experienced a dramatically different story. Charles Leclerc endured a frustrating Canadian Grand Prix weekend, struggling to match Lewis Hamilton’s pace across the event. The Monegasque openly acknowledged after the race that it had been one of the most difficult weekends of his Formula 1 career, a rare admission from a driver known for his speed and consistency.
The contrast between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc also highlighted how sensitive the Ferrari SF-26 remains to setup direction. When the operating window is found, the car can clearly be competitive. Miss it, and performance can fall away quickly.
Lewis Hamilton’s setup reset changed everything
Speaking after the race, Lewis Hamilton explained that a different technical approach made the key difference in Montreal. Rather than continuing with previous configurations, the Ferrari driver opted for a revised setup philosophy after carefully reviewing performance data with his engineering team.
Lewis Hamilton indicated that the collaborative work with his race engineer proved especially valuable, helping identify a configuration that finally allowed him to attack the circuit with confidence instead of managing limitations corner after corner.
For the first time since arriving at Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton suggested he felt genuinely able to push the SF-26 aggressively throughout the lap, a major breakthrough for a driver who had often spoken about struggling to fully connect with the car. That confidence appeared especially visible on medium tyres, where the Briton showed particularly strong pace relative to much of the field.
Frederic Vasseur backed Lewis Hamilton’s requests
Lewis Hamilton also made it clear that Ferrari Team Principal Frederic Vasseur played an important role in the progress seen in Canada.
According to the Ferrari driver, several requests were made regarding changes to the car and overall working direction, with Frederic Vasseur strongly supporting the effort to help Lewis Hamilton feel more comfortable within the team’s operating environment. That level of backing may prove significant as the seven-time F1 world champion continues adapting to Ferrari’s systems, culture and technical processes after such a major career move.
Confidence between driver and team is often just as critical as raw car performance in Formula 1, particularly during transitional periods.
Why this matters ahead of Monaco
The timing of Ferrari’s apparent breakthrough could hardly be better. Monaco presents a completely different technical challenge from Montreal, but one that may actually suit Ferrari’s strengths even more.
With engine power far less decisive on the streets of Monte Carlo, chassis balance, traction, low-speed grip and driver confidence become the defining performance factors. Those are precisely the areas where Ferrari has shown flashes of excellence this season. If Lewis Hamilton’s newfound comfort carries over, and if Charles Leclerc rediscovers his usual Monaco form, Ferrari could emerge as a genuine threat for pole position and victory.
For Lewis Hamilton, Canada may not simply represent a strong one-off result—it could mark the moment his Ferrari journey truly began to click.
