The Autodromo Internacional do Algarve – known more colloquially as Portimao, after the port city it sits half an hour outside of – was opened in the autumn of 2008, with construction of the permanent facility completed in just seven months, and at a cost of €195 million. Portimao, like Mugello – another track that joined the F1 calendar in 2020 – has never hosted a Formula 1 World Championship event. The track was used for F1 pre-season testing in the winter of 2008-09, however – while several drivers on the grid, including Daniel Ricciardo, Charles Leclerc and Valtteri Bottas, experienced the Portuguese circuit during their junior careers.
2020 Portuguese Grand Prix weather forecast (Weather Info Portimão):
From the Formula 1 teams’ point of view, different weather conditions can result in very different races, and Formula 1 teams adapt their strategy accordingly, for example using different tyres in wet conditions, and taking account of cross winds which can cause stability problems at high speeds. It is always well worth checking the weather before any grand prix as it can often throw a curve ball into the mix, especially given the fact that Portimao seems to be an unpredictable weekend. Conditions appear uncertain ahead of the 2020 Formula 1 Eifel Grand Prix weekend. The temperature for race day is expected to be around 20-21 degrees, while according to the latest forecast, there is a chance of rain for Sunday afternoon. Particularly the race day could be affected by showers, while Friday and Saturday will most likely provide ideal conditions for drivers.
