On 9th April 2000, the San Marino Grand Prix took place at Imola. The race, the third of the season, was won by Michael Schumacher in an F1-2000, after a fantastic battle with Mika Hakkinen. The Finn tried to get the upper hand by undercutting the German and pitting early, but Schumacher responded by taking on even more fuel.
In the lead, Hakkinen had to pit early for his second stop, while Michael was able to keep going pushing hard with an empty track ahead of him with the McLaren now out of the way. For Schumacher it was win number 38, the 128th for Ferrari and three wins out of three so far that season. The German led the championship with 30 points, against 9 for his team-mate Rubens Barrichello and 8 for Giancarlo Fisichella in the Renault. Howver, McLaren staged a comeback with the driver’s title drought only ending for the Maranello squad at the penultimate race of the season in Suzuka.
