On 9th June 2002, the Canadian Grand Prix was held in Montreal, at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The clear favourite was Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari F2002. However, in qualifying, getting the better of everyone was the Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya in the Williams. Michael Schumacher and team-mate Rubens Barrichello were second and third.
At the start, the Brazilian got ahead of Michael, while Montoya settled into the lead. On lap 14, the Safety Car was needed after Jacques Villeneuve’s incident in the BAR, which ruined Barrichello’s and Montoya’s afternoon, as they were on a two stop strategy.
The road was therefore clear for the German who won from David Coulthard in the McLaren and Rubens Barrichello. It was win 150 for Ferrari and Schumacher’s 59th. Michael won his sixth Grand Prix of the season and his fifth Canadian Grand Prix win. At the end of this race, Michael’s championship lead was almost embarrassing: 70 points to 27 for Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya.
