GP Australia 2026 | Leclerc finishes third, but was victory possible against Mercedes? The Monegasque responds
Charles Leclerc crossed the line in third place at the 2026 Australian GP, raising the question: could Ferrari have challenged Mercedes for victory? Here’s the Ferrari driver’s response and an analysis of the race.
The new era of Formula 1 started with many questions. Ferrari demonstrated its strong launch advantage, with Leclerc jumping from fourth to first at the start. Lewis Hamilton also gained several positions. After an early battle with George Russell, Charles Leclerc managed to hold the lead while managing multiple battery and tire challenges. Unfortunately, the Virtual Safety Car changed the dynamics of the race. Mercedes pitted both cars, while Ferrari chose to stay out. It’s impossible to know if pitting would have altered the outcome. Here are Charles Leclerc’s words after the 2026 Australian GP.
Leclerc: “I didn’t feel the same gap we saw in qualifying”
“Was victory possible? I don’t know. Honestly, I didn’t think about it much. There are so many things to focus on in the car now that it’s difficult to make projections in advance during the race. I simply approached it lap by lap and managed the situation as it came. We had a good start and a solid battle in the opening laps. It was extremely intense because with all the clipping and everything else, it’s hard to predict everything in the car. But I was happy to hold first place during the initial stint. Then came the safety car: Mercedes wanted to try something different, and it paid off. I think they were still a bit faster today. The positive thing is that I didn’t feel the same gap we saw yesterday in qualifying, so it seems we’re better in race conditions, but there’s still a lot of work to do to catch up to them.”
Ferrari will therefore need to keep working to close the significant gap to Mercedes. While Charles Leclerc may not be completely satisfied, the team can be content with at least being competitive and challenging the leaders. Next week brings the Chinese GP, a very different track that could reshuffle the order—either positively or negatively—for Maranello. We’ll have to wait and see.
Charles Leclerc’s podium in Melbourne confirms that while Mercedes holds the technical edge in 2026, Ferrari’s race trim is significantly more competitive than their one-lap pace suggests. By highlighting the “clipping” and energy management as the primary hurdles, the Monegasque has identified the key areas where Ferrari’s engineers must focus their development if they hope to turn these podiums into victories as the season progresses.
