When the Monaco Grand Prix television coverage cut to the images of Ferrari junior Mick Schumacher’s crashed Haas, with the gearbox separated from the car, it looked like a massive accident.
It was shocking to see the gearbox, complete with rear suspension, wheels and rear wing, completely detached from the car.
So why is such separation happening so frequently, not just to Mick Schumacher but Formula 1 cars in general given there have been partial separations in the case of Yuki Tsunoda’s crash at the Imola circuit in 2021, and Lance Stroll at Mugello in 2020? And why isn’t it necessarily a bad thing to have cars coming apart in this way.
