When the Formula 1 blueprint for its next-generation of car rules was officially presented two years ago, the expectation was that the cars could be more than three seconds slower than the current generation that they will be replacing. But as the time draws closer for these radically different machines to hit the track, it now appears they could be very close to their 2021 predecessors in terms of lap times.
