Using the graphics created by the Twitter profile “driven by data.”, F1 TECH explains all of the information that Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz can consult while driving his F1-75 at speeds of over 300 km/h.
The display shows the number of engaged gears in the centre, which is clearly one of the easiest data points to recognize. This has a very obvious function in that it shows the driver what gear the car is currently in.
This is important to understand not only to stay within the engine’s optimal RPM range, but also to change the way the car handles. In some corners, for example, the driver may want to enter in a higher gear or shift gears up much earlier than usual, which is known as a short shift. This is done to make the rear more stable under load, making oversteer less of an issue.
