Former Ferrari general manager and current F1 journalist and expert Peter Windsor analyses the results of a dramatic 2023 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park circuit, a race which was won brilliantly, by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Peter Windsor details Max Verstappen’s achievement; talks about the battle between Mercedes and Aston Martin, won by Merc’s Lewis Hamilton; and, throughout, looks at the various penalty decisions and re-starts that coloured this incident-filled day. In particular, the Formula 1 journalist questions the ruling to drop Scuderia Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz from fourth place effectively to nowhere after he collided with Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso at the first corner at the final re-start.
As Peter Windsor points out, this “first corner” was not actually a part of the race – a fact that worked to the benefit of both Aston drivers, who finished that lap in P11/P12 but were subsequently classified P3/P4 in the final results of the Australian Grand Prix:
