Filmed in 1987, this brief documentary was originally part of the British sports television program “Grandstand.” Although it could have easily faded into obscurity, it has fortunately been recently digitized from an old VHS tape and shared on YouTube.
The film features Murray Murray’s visit to the Ferrari headquarters in Maranello, where he had a personal conversation with Enzo Ferrari about the brand’s history and current state. Enzo would pass away a year after this interview, making it one of his last on-camera discussions.
Later in the documentary, Murray travels to Guildford, England, to visit John Barnard, who had established Ferrari’s Guildford Technical Office (GTO), sharing the same initials as Ferrari’s iconic creation, the GTO.
John Barnard is a highly influential car designer in Formula 1, and even in motorsport as a whole. He is credited with pioneering the now widespread use of carbon fiber composite chassis, first introduced in the McLaren MP4/1 in 1981, and he also played a key role in implementing the widely used semi-automatic gearbox with Ferrari in 1989.
Despite its brevity, this film provides an intriguing insight into the personalities of these two men during a pivotal era in Formula 1 history.
The interviews are conducted by the legendary Murray Walker, who requires no introduction. He served as the voice of Formula 1 for generations, delivering live commentary to audiences in the UK and around the world from 1976 until 2001.
