A dramatic moment unfolded during the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix as Oliver Bearman was involved in a major crash at Suzuka’s iconic Spoon corner, bringing immediate concern from teams and fans alike.
The Haas driver was running at high speed when the incident occurred, with early replays shedding light on the sequence that led to the heavy impact.
What triggered the crash
Oliver Bearman approached Spoon corner rapidly and found himself closing in quickly on Franco Colapinto’s Alpine ahead. The significant speed difference between the two cars created a critical situation, forcing the young British driver to react at the last moment.
As he moved left to avoid the slower car, the Ferrari junior placed his car onto the grass. At that point, he lost control, with the car continuing straight on. He struck the polystyrene marker board before spinning and hitting the outside barrier with a heavy side impact.
Given the high-speed nature of Spoon corner, any loss of control in that section often leads to substantial consequences, and this incident was no exception.
Immediate aftermath and medical response
Despite the severity of the crash, Ollie Bearman was able to exit the car without assistance, which was an encouraging sign. However, he was visibly limping as he walked away from the wreck, prompting marshals to quickly assist him and help him sit down behind the safety barrier.
The medical car arrived on the scene within seconds, following standard Formula 1 safety procedures. Bearman was then transported to the medical centre for precautionary checks, as is protocol after such a heavy impact.
Team reaction: “Scary” incident
Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu reacted to the crash, highlighting the dangerous circumstances that led to the incident.
“He had huge closing speed against the car in front, so had to take avoiding action and went on the grass and crashed. Scary.”
When asked whether Bearman had been taken to the medical centre, Komatsu confirmed:
“I believe so yes.”
High-speed risk at Suzuka
The crash once again underlines the challenges of racing at Suzuka, a circuit renowned for its flowing layout and high-speed corners. Sections like Spoon require absolute precision, and even minor misjudgments can quickly escalate into major incidents.
The combination of closing speeds, dirty air, and limited runoff areas makes this track particularly unforgiving, especially during intense race conditions where drivers are constantly managing traffic and strategy.
Further updates on Oliver Bearman’s condition are expected following medical evaluations, with the primary concern focused on ensuring the driver’s safety after such a significant impact.
