Lewis Hamilton narrowly avoided disaster after a dramatic near-incident with Franco Colapinto during the second practice session at the Australian Grand Prix, in a moment that briefly raised serious safety concerns at Albert Park.
The frightening situation unfolded during FP2, when the Alpine driver suddenly found himself at the center of a potentially catastrophic moment involving the seven-time Formula 1 world champion. Expectations quickly rose that Colapinto might face disciplinary action from the race stewards after almost triggering a major collision on track.
As the session progressed, Colapinto encountered a significant mechanical problem with his car. The Argentine driver later explained that he experienced what he described as a “false neutral” just as he approached the final corner of the Albert Park circuit. The unexpected issue caused an abrupt loss of drive, dramatically reducing his speed at a critical part of the track.
Because of the sudden loss of momentum, Franco Colapinto’s car slowed significantly while still positioned close to the racing line, creating a potentially dangerous situation. Instead of immediately moving to the right-hand side of the track, the Alpine driver remained on the racing line as he attempted to manage the mechanical issue. At that very moment, Lewis Hamilton was approaching at full speed behind him, creating a heart-stopping near-miss between the two drivers.
The moment immediately attracted the attention of race control, and the stewards quickly launched an investigation into the incident. Franco Colapinto was summoned after the session to explain the circumstances and determine whether his actions constituted a breach of safety regulations, particularly regarding driving unnecessarily slowly on the racing line.
Following their review of the situation, however, the stewards ultimately decided that no further action would be taken against the young Alpine driver. The ruling came as a major relief for both Colapinto and the Alpine team after what had initially looked like a potentially serious disciplinary case.
In their detailed statement, the stewards outlined the sequence of events that led to the dramatic moment on track. According to their report, Franco Colapinto had been in constant communication with his race engineer and the Alpine pit wall while trying to manage the technical problem affecting his car.
As he continued slowly along the left-hand side of the main straight, Franco Colapinto positioned the car deliberately in that area of the circuit. The intention was to ensure he could quickly exit the track if the mechanical issue persisted or worsened. From a safety perspective, the team believed this would provide the most controlled way to handle the situation.
However, as the driver approached the control line while still traveling at reduced speed, Lewis Hamilton suddenly appeared behind him on a fast lap. The Ferrari man, who had been pushing during the practice session, was confronted with the unexpected sight of a much slower car directly in his path.
With a clear view of Colapinto’s car from a considerable distance, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion was forced to react quickly. The British driver took immediate evasive action in order to avoid what could have been a serious collision at high speed. Fortunately, thanks to Lewis Hamilton’s quick reactions, the potentially dangerous moment passed without contact.
Speaking about the incident afterward, Franco Colapinto explained that he had been carefully monitoring his mirrors while dealing with the problem. The Alpine driver stressed that he was fully aware of the traffic around him and was particularly attentive to the cars approaching from behind.
He also confirmed that he was following the instructions given by his team over the radio. According to Colapinto, Alpine had instructed him to remain on the left-hand side of the track, in line with the guidance issued by the Formula 1 Race Director regarding cars experiencing issues during sessions.
The young driver believed that abruptly moving away from the racing line at that moment could have created an even more dangerous situation for the approaching cars. As a result, he chose to remain predictable and maintain his position on the left side of the circuit while attempting to nurse the car back safely.
After reviewing all available evidence, including telemetry data, team radio communications, and video footage, the stewards concluded that Franco Colapinto’s actions were not erratic or reckless. Importantly, they determined that, given the circumstances and the mechanical failure affecting the car, he had not been driving “unnecessarily slowly” on the track.
The officials also noted that the Alpine driver had positioned his car in a manner intended to maintain safety while dealing with the problem. This assessment ultimately led the stewards to decide that Colapinto had acted reasonably under the circumstances.
As a result, the stewards officially cleared Franco Colapinto of any wrongdoing, confirming that no penalty or further action would be taken following the dramatic near-incident with Lewis Hamilton during the Australian Grand Prix practice session.
Although the moment briefly raised tensions in the paddock, it ultimately ended without consequences for either driver. Both Colapinto and Hamilton were able to continue their preparation for the Australian Grand Prix weekend, with the incident serving as a reminder of how quickly unexpected mechanical problems can create dangerous situations during Formula 1 practice sessions.
