Aerodynamics is one of the dominant performance differentiators in Formula 1. But aerodynamics has also made it hard to get close to another car because following cars are in ‘dirty air’. Australian Formula One aerodynamicist Willem Toet, who joined the Scuderia Ferrari team as head of the aerodynamics department in 1994, explains how Eddie Irvine went 0.5s quicker when 1996 Ferrari F1 car became easier to drive but not faster:
