Kimi Antonelli produced a stunning qualifying lap to secure pole position for the British Grand Prix, narrowly denying Charles Leclerc after one of the closest battles of the Formula 1 season. While the final timing screens showed only a tiny margin separating the two drivers, a closer look using the Ghost Car comparison reveals exactly where the decisive advantage was gained.
The Ghost Car analysis overlays the laps of the Mercedes and Ferrari drivers, allowing fans to compare every phase of their qualifying performances corner by corner. It provides a fascinating insight into how two outstanding laps unfolded and highlights the small details that ultimately determined who would start Sunday’s race from pole position.
For much of the lap, Charles Leclerc appeared to have the upper hand. The Ferrari driver carried excellent speed through the opening sectors and looked on course to secure another impressive pole position after once again extracting the maximum from the SF-26 during the decisive Q3 run.
However, Formula 1 qualifying is often decided by the smallest margins, and Silverstone once again demonstrated how a lap can change dramatically over its final kilometres. As the two drivers accelerated towards the Hangar Straight after Chapel, the balance of power shifted.
According to the Ghost Car comparison, the Monegasque held a slight advantage before reaching the long back straight. But once both cars accelerated onto the full-throttle section, Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes found the extra performance required to overturn the deficit.
Whether the advantage came from superior traction, energy deployment, aerodynamic efficiency or simply a cleaner exit from the final high-speed sequence, the result was the same. The Italian steadily closed the gap before moving ahead during the final part of the lap, securing pole position by making the difference where it mattered most.
The comparison perfectly illustrates how incredibly close modern Formula 1 qualifying has become. At the highest level, victories in qualifying are rarely determined by one spectacular corner alone. Instead, they are usually decided by a combination of tiny gains accumulated throughout the lap, with one particularly strong section often proving decisive.
For Ferrari, the result remains highly encouraging despite narrowly missing pole. Charles Leclerc once again demonstrated the strong one-lap pace of the SF-26 and confirmed the progress made following the setup changes introduced after the Sprint session. The Monegasque looked comfortable throughout qualifying and extracted another excellent performance from the car.
Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelli continued to underline why he has quickly established himself as one of Formula 1’s brightest young stars. Delivering under pressure in the final moments of Q3, the Mercedes driver produced a composed and precise lap when it mattered most, converting a small opportunity into pole position.
The Ghost Car analysis also highlights just how evenly matched Ferrari and Mercedes have become at Silverstone. Rather than one car dominating across the entire lap, both machines displayed different strengths in different sectors, creating an exciting battle that remained undecided until the final seconds.
With both drivers starting from the front row, Sunday’s British Grand Prix promises another fascinating contest. If qualifying pace is any indication, strategy, tyre management and execution over the race distance are likely to determine the outcome, with Ferrari hoping Charles Leclerc can turn his impressive qualifying speed into a challenge for victory.
