The SF21 proved to be competitive in the slow corners at city circuits such as Monaco and Baku, while at the same time able to manage tire deterioration in a race with high temperatures.
Despite the fact that Hungaroring is a hot asphalt traction circuit that creates the best conditions for Ferrari, the central part must also be considered. A sequence of corners that requires a lot of downforce and support that turns this one section into a fast sector with quick changes of direction.
McLaren needs a technological boost to react to the Ferrari results at Silverstone and on a track like Hungary that favors the characteristics of the SF21. Andreas Seidl: “We are not surprised by Ferrari’s progress. It’s a strong team with two fast drivers and they have the potential to react to problems and it will be a tough battle until the end of the season”.
McLaren therefore responds with an immediate upgrade before the summer break and a new specific aerodynamic package debuts at the Hungaroring to increase downforce for slow tracks, where more downforce is needed.
The ground effect revolution in Formula 1 opens up completely new scenarios, cancels the previous advantages accumulated in 8 seasons of hybrid engines and becomes the main activator of new ideas and technologies that today more than ever serve an F1 throttled by regulatory restrictions. If this generation of hybrid single-seaters has put the PU at the center of car design, the new technical course with wing cars puts the engine in the background, which returns to being a supplier of energy and propulsion, and moves the axis to aerodynamics as design of the car.
Fabiano Vandone takes us to the Hungaroring circuit, helping us discover the optimal setup to find the best lap time.
60 years ago, Ferrari won its first constructors’ title with its first rear-engined car. In the two previous seasons, the world champion Cooper Climax with Black Jack Brabham made the front-engined single-seaters obsolete, even Enzo Ferrari surrendered to the evidence and his team put on the track the 156 F1 anticipated by two prototypes … the story of the Ferrari 156F1.
