With Vanthoor a lap down, Robert Kubica attempted to overtake the lapped BMW and a slower class vehicle. As they approached Mulsanne Corner, the two cars made side-to-side contact, causing Vanthoor’s car to veer head-on into the armco barriers. His car eventually rolled to a stop on the inside of the corner.
Fortunately, Vanthoor was not seriously injured. He emerged from the car clutching his chest, visibly furious as he believed he had been unfairly pushed off the track. The mechanics of BMW M Team WRT accepted the fate of their #15 car with resignation.
As the race continues, this incident could pose significant problems for Kubica. Already facing challenges, the long-term leaders in the Hypercar class encountered another issue when, 20 minutes past the one-quarter mark of the race, Kubica reported a gearbox alarm to his team.
