During the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton made a striking remark, suggesting that Ferrari might need to replace him. The candid statement, delivered amid a visibly emotional and disappointing weekend, has added fuel to growing speculation about Hamilton’s future with the Italian team.
Hamilton’s comment followed a frustrating qualifying session in Budapest, where he was eliminated in Q2 and ultimately placed only 12th on the grid. Despite hopes of a recovery on race day, the British driver failed to make any significant progress in Sunday’s Grand Prix. Post-race, Hamilton did not walk back his initial suggestion, prompting further discussion about whether his position within Ferrari could come under review.
Ferrari, for their part, have not publicly hinted at any desire to make changes to their driver line-up. However, former Formula 1 driver and current commentator Ralf Schumacher has indicated that internally, the team may be far from indifferent to Hamilton’s recent form. According to Schumacher, Ferrari could be taking a hard look at the situation behind the scenes, rather than ignoring the British driver’s ongoing struggles.
Team principal Frédéric Vasseur now faces a crucial decision. The question is whether he can help Hamilton rediscover his top form, or whether the damage to Ferrari’s image—caused by a mix of underwhelming results and Hamilton’s increasingly self-critical tone—will force the Scuderia to reconsider its long-term direction.
Oliver Bearman Positioned for a Ferrari Future Amid Ongoing Hamilton Uncertainty
Looking further ahead, it is widely believed that Oliver Bearman is the leading candidate to step in when Hamilton eventually departs—whether that occurs at the end of his current contract in 2026 or sooner. The 20-year-old British driver is currently the only member of the Ferrari Driver Academy actively competing in Formula 1, and his recent performances have made a strong case for his promotion.
Bearman has already proven himself in a Ferrari seat, having filled in for Carlos Sainz during last season’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix when the Spaniard was sidelined by illness. On that occasion, Bearman delivered an impressive performance, finishing seventh in his maiden F1 race. He followed that up with a tenth-place finish in Azerbaijan while driving for Haas, becoming the first driver in the sport’s history to score points with two different teams in his first two Grand Prix starts.
These performances underline Bearman’s remarkable ability to get up to speed quickly—an essential trait for any top-level F1 driver. Reports from Sky Italy also revealed that the Ferrari junior already has an apartment near the Italian side’s headquarters in Maranello, further indicating the team’s long-term interest in his development. His fluency in Italian adds another layer of readiness, potentially easing his transition into a full-time Ferrari seat. In contrast, Hamilton has only recently begun learning the language and has admitted that his lessons have not been a top priority in recent months.
Bearman’s Talent Evident Despite Misfortune in 2025 Season
Despite his obvious talent and promise, Oliver Bearman has endured a frustrating campaign in the 2025 Formula 1 season so far. Heading into the summer break, he sat 19th in the drivers’ standings—the lowest-ranked driver to have participated in every race. However, that position fails to reflect the true nature of his performances.
Between the Canadian and Belgian Grands Prix, Bearman finished 11th on four consecutive occasions, narrowly missing out on valuable championship points each time. These near-misses have contributed to a growing narrative that Bearman has been the unluckiest driver on the grid this year.
Even so, he has consistently held his own against teammate Esteban Ocon—a proven race winner with a strong reputation in the paddock. Oliver Bearman has outperformed Esteban Ocon in 12 competitive sessions, and the qualifying head-to-head between them is extremely close, standing at 9–7 in the Frenchman’s favour.
Of course, Ollie Bearman’s inexperience has led to a few notable mistakes. The most high-profile of these occurred at Silverstone, where a misjudgement under red flag conditions resulted in a pit-lane collision and a 10-place grid penalty. However, such errors are generally accepted as part of a young driver’s learning curve, and expectations are that the Ferrari junior will iron them out as he gains more experience in the sport.
Hamilton’s Ferrari Future in Doubt as Ollie Bearman’s Case Strengthens
As the 2025 season continues, the gap between expectation and reality for Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari has become increasingly difficult to ignore. While Hamilton arrived at Maranello amid great fanfare and hopes of leading the Scuderia back to championship glory, his results have fallen short, and his own comments have only intensified the scrutiny.
In contrast, Oliver Bearman continues to develop quietly but impressively in the background. With key signs pointing to Ferrari’s interest in grooming him for a future role, including his on-track performances, living arrangements in Maranello, and command of the Italian language, Ollie Bearman’s candidacy is becoming harder to overlook.
Unless Hamilton and Ferrari can turn their fortunes around, the team could be forced to make a bold decision sooner than expected—and Bearman appears more ready than ever to seize the opportunity.
