The next great race in F1 is coming up on November 3rd in Austin, Texas. The United States Grand Prix plays heavily into the World Championship.
First, let’s look at some of the race weekend odds at the best betting sites online.
USA Grand Prix Winner
Lewis Hamilton leads the pack on the odds boards to win at 15/8. This makes sense since the Brit has the fastest lap time at this race, just 1:37.392. And this was recent, done in 2018.
That said, both Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel are right behind the Mercedes driver. Charles Leclerc is 5/2 to win, and Vettel is 7/2 to take the checkered flag. The next most favored driver is Max Verstappen at 8/1. So there is a significant jump in the implied probability once it gets past Vettel. Hamilton, Leclerc, and Vettel are all closely bunched together, 34.8%, 28.6% 22.2%, respectively. But the 8/1 odds on Verstappen plummet down to 11.1% chance of winning.
So, if we combine the probability, Ferrari has just over a 50% chance of winning at the United States Grand Prix. That in itself is pretty remarkable.
Fastest Qualifier
Things are bound to get exciting during the qualifying runs and Team Ferrari is favored to put up the fastest times. Charles Leclerc is 13/8, followed by Lewis Hamilton at 5/2, and teammate Sebastion Vettel at 11/4. Once again, Max Verstappen is 4th in line at 5/1.
Top 3 & Points
It almost goes without saying that the top three are also the favorites for a Top 3 finish. But it isn’t until we look at the Points Finish lines that we see Valterri Bottas jump into the top four. Hamilton is 1/11, again leading on the odds boards, followed by Ferrari’s Leclerc at 1/9. Bottas is 1/8 and Vettel 1/7. So, of all of the primary outright odds, Team Ferrari has two of the top four most probable drivers for this course.
Will Hamilton Win 6th World Championship in the United States?
It’s looking like the Briton will be celebrating a win even if he loses. Essentially, no matter what Team Ferrari does or how well they perform, the matter is out of their hands. Because of Lewis Hamilton’s massive points lead, the only way that he does not win the World Championship on November 3rd in Austin, Texas is if his teammate, Valterri Bottas wins the race. If Bottas wins, it still doesn’t mean that Hamilton won’t be celebrating his 6th title. All he has to do is finish in the top eight to edge his teammate out on points.
So. could this be the tactic that Ferrari tries to take, slow down Hamilton at all cost, even if it means letting Team Mercedes win through Bottas? Will they try and ‘live to play another day’? It will take a perfectly executed strategy to block Hamilton out of the top eight with as fast as he’s been running, and the passing possibilities presented in Austin at the Circuit of the Americas.
It’s not impossible but it can be done. If Ferrari can – with the help of the rest of the field– block out Hamilton and get Leclerc in for a second-place finish, perhaps they can stay alive.
