The 2025 United States Grand Prix, scheduled from October 17 to 19 at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, is shaping up to be a scorching weekend, both on and off the track. The FIA has issued an official notice to all teams and race officials, declaring a “Heat Hazard” due to the high temperatures forecasted during the event.
The notice states that the official meteorological service expects heat indices to exceed 31°C during parts of the Sprint race on Saturday or the main race on Sunday. Consequently, the FIA has formally declared a thermal risk for the weekend.
According to regulations, the Heat Hazard declaration triggers a series of safety protocols to protect drivers, marshals, and team personnel. These include continuous monitoring of environmental conditions, enhanced hydration systems, and the ability for FIA medical staff to request additional checks during the weekend.
High temperatures challenge teams and drivers
In recent years, heat management has become a central issue for Formula 1, following extreme thermal stress incidents such as the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, where several drivers reported physical difficulties due to the scorching conditions. Austin, traditionally hot in October, presents an important safety test as well.
The extreme heat will inevitably impact race strategies. Beyond accelerated tire degradation, teams must also carefully manage power unit cooling and aerodynamic efficiency. In this context, Saturday’s Sprint could play a decisive role in assessing the cars’ thermal limits before Sunday’s full-length race.
For the drivers, the Austin GP will be as much a test of physical endurance as technical skill. The COTA track is one of the most demanding on the calendar, with 20 corners, significant elevation changes, and high-intensity sections reminiscent of Silverstone’s famous sector.
FIA emphasizes safety amid extreme conditions
The FIA’s decision to declare a heat risk underscores the Federation’s growing focus on extreme weather conditions, especially given increasingly variable climate patterns. Austin, already known for memorable races, is preparing for a weekend that promises both spectacular racing and complex challenges for drivers and machines alike.
The 2025 United States Grand Prix will start on Sunday, October 19, at 15:00 local time (21:00 Central European Time), promising an exciting and physically demanding weekend for the entire paddock.
