The FIA has formalized the points where it will be possible to exploit the DRS system in the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the sixth round of the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship.
After Max Verstappen’s win in Monaco, which was possible as a result of Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc unfortunate withdrawal during the installation lap on Sunday, teams and drivers will return to battle in the very fast Baku City circuit, a location that has returned to the Formula 1 calendar after the forced break last year due to Covid19.
As two years ago, the FIA has chosen to activate two DRS zones, which will be positioned in the main straight of the Azerbaijani circuit and in the extension leading from turns 2 to 3. The detection points, one for each sector, will be placed just before Turn 20 and Turn 2.
The DRS system is controlled by the drivers at the push of a button on their steering wheel, which triggers a flap on their rear wing to open, leaving a gap in the rear wing and allowing air particles to pass through the gap, instead of being blocked by the solid bodywork when the gap is closed.
This, due to the complicated aerodynamic profile of an F1 car, can lead to an increase in the speed of the car by around 10-12 km/h.
