Toyota has returned to the top step of the podium at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, sealing their victory at the end of a race built on patience, discipline, and flawless execution. The triumph of the number 7 GR010 Hybrid carries even more weight given the manufacturer’s starting positions, with the two Japanese machines launching from a distant fourteenth and fifteenth on the grid.
In the very opening stages of the classic endurance race, the team elected to pit earlier than their main rivals, crossing strategies with Cadillac and BMW. This tactical gamble allowed the GR010s to quickly find clean air, making up significant ground while preserving their tyres beautifully during the hottest hours of the day.
For over three-quarters of the race distance, Toyota remained in ambush mode without ever overextending their pace. Up ahead, it was Cadillac and BMW setting the rhythm, with the American prototypes looking entirely in control of the situation for more than twenty hours.
The turning point arrived with just five and a half hours remaining on the clock. A Safety Car period, triggered by an accident involving an LMGT3-class Porsche, bunched up the field. This neutralization brought Toyota right back into striking distance of the leaders, and from that moment on, they launched their decisive attack.
In the closing stages, the GR010 Hybrids surged into a provisional one-two formation before the number 20 WRT BMW managed to split them and claim the runner-up spot. Ultimately, it was the number 7 Toyota taking the chequered flag, bringing the Japanese manufacturer back to lift the most prestigious trophy in world endurance racing.
24 Hours of Le Mans 2026 – Hypercar: Cadillac throws away a seemingly certain victory
For more than twenty hours, Cadillac stood out as the absolute protagonist of the event. The V-Series.R prototypes dictated the pace both on single-lap speed and during long stints, proving to be the most competitive machinery in the field.
However, everything fractured just as the race reached its critical climax. Technical issues hitting the number 38 car severely dented the American manufacturer’s ambitions, while less effective tyre management compared to Toyota progressively cleared a path for their rivals.
After dominating the vast majority of the marathon, Cadillac found themselves on the back foot during the decisive final hours, watching a victory that had seemed securely in their grasp all morning slip away completely.
24 Hours of Le Mans 2026 – Hypercar: A Le Mans to forget for Ferrari
While Toyota celebrates, Ferrari leaves the Circuit de la Sarthe facing plenty of questions and very few certainties. The race for the 499Ps was heavily compromised by operational errors, technical gremlins, and above all, a deeply concerning lack of outright performance.
The number 50 entry lost significant ground early on due to a lengthy garage visit required to fix an issue with its onboard fire extinguisher system. Later on, with only a few hours left on the clock and during a Safety Car phase, the car was forced to pull over at the side of the track, bringing its race to a premature end.
The surviving Ferraris ultimately confirmed what James Calado had predicted on the eve of the event: “Finishing fifth would be a miracle.” That statement proved entirely prophetic, with the Maranello machines crossing the line in a lonely fifth and sixth position.
More worrying than the final classification, however, was the total lack of competitiveness shown across the entire 24 hours. The 499Ps were never truly in a position to take the fight to Cadillac, BMW, or Toyota, failing to match their pace during the heat of the day or the cooler hours of the night.
A clear example of these struggles occurred after the first Safety Car period, which had completely reset the gaps. In just one hour of green-flag racing, the number 51 Ferrari fell roughly a minute behind the leaders once again. It is a statistic that vividly highlights the performance deficit the team suffered throughout the Le Mans weekend.
Ferrari now heads into the second half of the season facing a steep learning curve. The primary objectives moving forward will be to better understand the behaviour of the new Michelin tyres, salvage crucial championship points, and gather valuable data ahead of 2027, the year scheduled for the competitive debut of the 499P Evo variant.
In conclusion, this dramatic edition of the legendary endurance race highlights how quickly fortunes can shift at Le Mans, as Toyota’s tactical brilliance rewarded them with the crown while Ferrari faces a rigorous rebuilding phase ahead of their next campaign.
