Toto Wolff has argued that Ferrari’s last two Formula 1 victories came from opportunities Mercedes failed to convert, as the team principal assessed his squad’s dominant but reliability-hit opening half of the 2026 season. Despite comfortably leading both championships, Wolff believes technical failures have prevented Mercedes from building an even greater advantage.
After 11 Grands Prix, Mercedes hold a 72-point lead over Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship. Andrea Kimi Antonelli has won six races and established a 50-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton in the Drivers’ standings, where the battle has also been shaped by the points Lewis Hamilton has lost during Ferrari’s championship campaign.
George Russell sits third in the standings with two victories, but has repeatedly suffered reliability problems with his car and has lost ground in the internal comparison with Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Retirements and points lost through power unit failures, often involving the battery, have reduced what could otherwise have been an even larger Mercedes advantage.
Toto Wolff identifies Mercedes reliability problems as key weakness
Toto Wolff openly acknowledged that reliability has been Mercedes’ most painful weakness during the first part of the season.
“I think we started the season very strongly,” Toto Wolff told RN365. “I believe it was also our preparation, as an integrated power unit-chassis company, or sporting team, that enabled us to achieve results from a fairly dominant position.”
However, the Mercedes team principal believes the championship tables do not fully reflect the performance potential available to his team because of its repeated failures.
“We were definitely penalised by reliability. We had three or four retirements, so we probably lost 70–80 points through non-finishes compared with Ferrari, who beat us, because today we have a lead of just over 70 points,” he explained.
“If you add another 70, that would be a really solid, solid lead. But we lost those points, and obviously everyone is catching up. So there have been more difficult Grands Prix.”
Toto Wolff links Ferrari wins to Mercedes setbacks
When assessing Mercedes’ recent defeats, Toto Wolff suggested that Ferrari’s last two victories were made possible by circumstances that prevented his own team from winning.
“Actually, Ferrari’s last two wins were wins because we lost them: bad luck with the Virtual Safety Car in Barcelona and Andrea Kimi Antonelli retiring at Silverstone,” Toto Wolff said.
His remarks come as the Maranello team continue to evaluate their position following Frédéric Vasseur’s 2026 mid-season assessment. Mercedes remain the benchmark in both championships, but their reliability failures have allowed Ferrari to limit the damage and remain within reach if the competitive picture changes during the second half of the campaign.
Mercedes balance 2026 upgrades against next season
Although Mercedes remain the team Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull must beat, they have not yet introduced the same wave of new components as the Italian team. Ferrari have followed a more active development programme, with the Scuderia adopting a race-by-race approach to their 2026 upgrades.
Toto Wolff explained that a rival’s upgrade package can produce a sudden step in performance and quickly change the competitive order.
“You can see that when somebody brings an upgrade, it is almost as though they move up one level,” he said. “So we had Ferrari or McLaren bringing an upgrade while we did not, and suddenly we really had to fight hard.”
Mercedes also intend to introduce further developments, although the timing has not yet been established. The team must balance the resources committed to the current car with preparations for the following season, while remaining within Formula 1’s cost cap.
“Yes, we will bring upgrades, but it all depends on when we can introduce them because, obviously, you have to balance next year and this year,” Toto Wolff concluded. “Again, the cost cap is a huge subject. How many parts can you produce and put on a car? So it is not yet clear when.”
The uncertainty surrounding Mercedes’ development timetable could offer an opportunity to their rivals if Ferrari’s new components deliver a significant step. Charles Leclerc has already urged the Scuderia to remain aggressive in the 2026 Formula 1 upgrade race, with the rate of development likely to play an important role in whether Mercedes can retain their commanding position.
