First the Silverstone race and yesterday the Austrian Grand Prix Sprint race at the Red Bull Ring: if on the one hand Ferrari can be satisfied to have two drivers that are able to be close to each other on track, on the other it is clear that internal management risks are creating more than a headache for Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto. The Ferrari boss explained that for the moment it is too early to choose between the two drivers on an ongoing basis, given that there are just 12 points that separate Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, but also that, if at some point there were clear chances of winning the championship for one of them, the team will do everything to help him.
Yesterday many fans made their opinions heard on social media, always under the sign of little conviction about the strategies devised by the Maranello pit wall.
In this context, it is interesting to hear the opinion of Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ team principal, who understands rivalry after what happened within his team with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, albeit in a situation of absolute domination by Mercedes. “The internal duel between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz offered a great fight for the public, perhaps the only one during the Sprint”, the Austrian said, as Toto Wolff then sympathizing with Mattia Binotto:
“If they let the drivers fight each other as happened during the Sprint, there will be criticism, because the internal battle wastes time. But at the same time, if they had already taken a steady direction towards either of them, they would probably have faced even more criticism. In such a case, we are walking a very fine line.” – the Mercedes team principal said.
