Toto Wolff has responded to the possibility of Andrea Kimi Antonelli joining Ferrari in the future, insisting that the Italian team should have acted years ago if it wanted to secure the highly rated Mercedes driver.
The Mercedes team principal addressed the hypothetical prospect during an interview with Belgian broadcaster RTBF over the Spa-Francorchamps weekend. Far from appearing unsettled by the question, Toto Wolff used it to deliver a pointed message to Ferrari while making it clear that Mercedes is aware of what could happen in the future.
Toto Wolff responds to Kimi Antonelli Ferrari possibility
“We are aware of this possibility,” Toto Wolff stated. “But Kimi has been a Mercedes driver since he was 11. Ferrari should have signed him six or seven years ago, instead of only now realising that they have a good Italian driver. Of course, they will do everything they can to have an Italian driver.”
Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s nationality and performances have inevitably made a potential future association with Ferrari an attractive subject in Italy. However, Toto Wolff stressed the strength and length of the 19-year-old’s relationship with Mercedes, which began well before his arrival in Formula 1.
The Austrian’s comments did not indicate that a transfer is being negotiated or that Ferrari has made a formal approach. Instead, he acknowledged the hypothetical possibility while underlining that Mercedes identified Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s potential and brought him into its development programme when he was still a child.
Any future driver-market discussion would also have to be viewed in the context of Ferrari’s current line-up and its wider ambitions. The Scuderia is presently focused on maximising the partnership between Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, with both drivers central to Ferrari’s hopes for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Mercedes managing the pressure around Andrea Kimi Antonelli
Toto Wolff also discussed the challenge of managing the expectations surrounding Andrea Kimi Antonelli, particularly as the young driver and his family adapt to the intense scrutiny that accompanies a Formula 1 career.
“His parents are entering a world they do not know,” Toto Wolff explained. “The Italian media put a lot of pressure on him, comparing him to Ayrton Senna as early as the second race. I asked them to calm down a little because we were talking about a 19-year-old who had won two races, not three world championships. But Italy is proud to have a young driver. They have not had one this competitive for a very long time.”
His remarks highlighted the difficult balance Mercedes must strike. Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s results have increased expectations, especially among Italian Formula 1 fans, but Toto Wolff believes those achievements must remain in perspective given the driver’s age and relative lack of experience.
Toto Wolff vows to continue protecting Kimi Antonelli
The Mercedes team principal indicated that he has no intention of becoming complacent about Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s development, even though the Italian has so far avoided the major setbacks that can affect a young driver’s first seasons at the highest level.
“We have to continue protecting Kimi, and that is what we are doing,” Toto Wolff added. “We are aware that there may be more difficult moments, even though there have not been any so far.”
For Mercedes, protecting Andrea Kimi Antonelli means managing both the competitive demands of Formula 1 and the growing attention surrounding his future. Toto Wolff recognises why the prospect of an Italian driver representing Ferrari attracts interest, but his message from Spa was unmistakable: Mercedes invested in Antonelli long before that possibility became a major talking point.
