Pride and confidence. This is what Toto Wolff wants to convey to his Mercedes team, after the recent Monaco Grand Prix and the comparison with Ferrari and McLaren is meant to remind everyone who has truly dominated the last decade of F1.
A dominance that ended in 2022 and now seems very distant. Since the regulation changes, the Brackley team has not been able to create a truly competitive car. Only one victory, Brazil 2022, and many technical changes in order to try to improve the situation. The W15 single-seater was supposed to be, and it was, a return to a more “traditional” car, but this did not guarantee the performance leap that was expected from Mercedes.
From the Imola weekend, an important development path began, which should gradually solve the car’s problems to allow Lewis Hamilton and George Russell to try to climb back up. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has never denied the difficult moment the team is going through. However, the Austrian, speaking to the PA agency, wanted to claim all the successes achieved in recent years.
Toto Wolff’s comments:
“We have won 115 times and have been beaten in the last 50 races. This is not the position we want to be in. The feeling we are experiencing is horrible.” – he admitted – “Ferrari has not won a Constructors’ Championship since 2008. Red Bull did not manage for eight years in a row because we were winning. We need to put things in perspective. This is the third year we haven’t won, it’s not eight and it’s not sixteen. McLaren hasn’t won a Constructors’ Championship since 1998 and a Drivers’ Championship since 2008.” – the Mercedes team boss added.

“Last year we finished second, but it’s not enough. In 10 or 20 years, it will be seen that we won eight championships in a row and then lost three, or maybe four, not sixteen.”
You certainly can’t fault him for the statements. Under Toto Wolff’s guidance, Mercedes won the Constructors’ title from 2014 to 2021 while Ferrari and McLaren struggled more. However, the Formula 1 environment is always running at a high pace. The Brackley team needs a boost to get back to the top, and Toto is trying to provide it. Their big chance to restart will be 2026, but for now, it’s too early to give up.
