Austrian investor and former racing driver Toto Wolff, currently a 30% owner and executive director of Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team, has commented on the close battle between his team and Scuderia Ferrari for the 2017 F1 titles, as the Maranello side looks determined to give the current champions a run for their money, after several years during which Mercedes did not have a worthy opponent in the Formula 1 championship:
“Every weekend will push us to the limit; this is indeed the new reality of Formula One in the 2017 season.” – said the Mercedes boss, as reported by the Italian media – “The last three years were extraordinary for us, but this season I have re-discovered why I love the sport. I love the intense competition. This competition means that you will not be winning easily – but that you’ll have a fierce fight on your hands. Because of that, the feeling is even greater when you manage to come out on top, as we did in Spain. If we get the job done in Monaco, I am pretty sure we’ll bring down the garage roof. We’re all properly fired up for this fight.” – Toto Wolff continued, ahead of the race on Sunday.
Despite Mercedes appearing to have the edge over Scuderia Ferrari at the last race, the 2017 Spanish Grand Prix, that does not necessarily mean that the Silver Arrows head into the Monaco Grand Prix as favourites to come out with the maximum result according to Toto Wolff, who added: “We expect Monaco to be a completely different ball game to Barcelona, because the circumstances, working environment and driving challenges are completely different to anywhere else – and you need to get everything exactly right if you want to perform to your maximum around those streets. Not every factor is under your control, either, so you need to turn fortune in your favour at the right time if you want everything to come together.”
