Toto Wolff, no hard feelings for Lewis Hamilton
When Lewis Hamilton confided to him that he would be going to Ferrari in 2025, Toto Wolff’s first reaction was one of disbelief. After the initial shock of seeing one of the main protagonists of the Mercedes era join their rivals, the Austrian team principal wished the seven-time world champion the best for his adventure at Maranello, harboring no hard feelings about his professional choice. A choice that Wolff believes could prove to be a winning one.
Toto Wolff’s comments
“If Ferrari is able to give Lewis a competitive car, he can win a world championship, there’s no doubt,” Toto Wolff said, as reported by the PA news agency.
“I will always have a personal relationship with Lewis and I will look back on the great moments, both professional and personal. When Lewis moves to Ferrari, he will become a competitor, but I will always wish him happy days,” he added. “He had told me he would stay, then he decided to go. But people change their minds and circumstances change: you have to respect opinions and I have no hard feelings.” – the Mercedes team principal continued.
The renewal and then the farewell
Lewis Hamilton had indeed signed a two-year contract renewal (or rather, a 1+1) that would have tied him to Mercedes until the end of 2025. Evidently, Sir Lewis realized that even for the next season, the Brackley team would not be able to provide him with a competitive car, receiving instead much more convincing arguments from Scuderia Ferrari: a scenario that becomes increasingly credible now that the Scuderia has won two of the first eight GPs and has considerably closed the gap with Red Bull.
