Toto Wolff warns Ferrari will remain a serious threat until the end of the F1 season
Charles Leclerc’s victory at the British Grand Prix has significantly strengthened Ferrari’s position in the 2026 Formula 1 championship, prompting Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff to acknowledge that the Scuderia could remain a genuine threat throughout the remainder of the campaign.
Although Mercedes continues to lead both championships and is still widely regarded as the benchmark team on the grid, Ferrari’s recent progress has not gone unnoticed. Following victories in two of the last three Grands Prix, the Maranello outfit has demonstrated that it is capable of challenging for wins on a consistent basis, forcing its main rivals to reassess the competitive picture.
Speaking after the race at Silverstone, Toto Wolff admitted that Ferrari had exceeded expectations once again and warned that Mercedes could not afford to underestimate the Italian team during the second half of the season.
“We have to focus on ourselves,” Wolff explained. “Before the weekend, everyone was saying this circuit would expose Ferrari’s weaknesses, but instead they proved to be extremely competitive. I believe we’ll have to deal with them until the very end of the season.”
Fred Vasseur refuses to be drawn into championship talk
While Ferrari’s recent resurgence has inevitably sparked fresh speculation about a possible title challenge, team principal Fred Vasseur has once again chosen to play down the growing excitement surrounding the Scuderia’s championship prospects.
The Frenchman stressed that Formula 1 is a sport where opinions can change dramatically from one race weekend to the next, making it dangerous to draw conclusions based on only a handful of results.
“The championship is something you keep talking about,” Vasseur said. “After Barcelona, everyone said we were back in the title fight. One week later, people were saying we were out of it again. My answer has always been exactly the same: you cannot make conclusions after just one or two races.”
Instead of focusing on the standings, Fred Vasseur insisted that Ferrari’s attention remains firmly on continuing its technical development and improving the overall package race after race.
“When I return to the factory, I’ll simply tell everyone that we’ve had a very good weekend and that our attention now turns to Spa. We’re not champions, but we’re not far away either. We’re making progress step by step.”
Ferrari sends a clear message to Mercedes
Regardless of the cautious approach adopted by Fred Vasseur, Ferrari’s performances have delivered an unmistakable statement to the rest of the Formula 1 paddock.
Mercedes may still possess the strongest overall package and remain the favourites for both world championships, but the gap no longer appears as comfortable as it did only a few weeks ago. Ferrari’s latest upgrades have transformed the SF-26 into a regular contender at the front, allowing both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to consistently fight near the front of the field.
With several races still remaining in the 2026 Formula 1 season, Mercedes can no longer assume that victories will come easily. If Ferrari continues its current upward trajectory, the battle between the two historic rivals could remain one of the defining storylines of the championship all the way to the final Grand Prix.
