Does Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari still sting for Toto Wolff? The Mercedes team principal has always tried to downplay it, but when you’ve won countless races and championships together, sharing both joys and struggles for 12 years, parting ways is never easy—especially when you’re the one who has to come to terms with being “left behind.”
Formula 1 is a world that moves at 300 km/h, and not just on the track. Even though it has only been a couple of months since the seven-time world champion donned Ferrari red, the image has already become a common sight in the collective imagination. And while it initially felt quite strange, even Wolff admitted that he has now grown accustomed to seeing Lewis in the colors of the Prancing Horse.
“Yes, inevitably. At first, it was a strange thought to imagine him in a different color after so many years at Mercedes,” Toto Wolff said in an interview with ORF. “But then he arrived, so to speak, with his red suit and his red car. In this fast-moving world, you adapt quickly. So now, Lewis Hamilton in red is already something normal.”
What struck Toto Wolff the most about Lewis Hamilton’s arrival in Maranello was the elegance of his first official photo. And it’s hard to disagree, as that’s not exactly the first word that comes to mind when thinking of the outfits Lewis Hamilton wore during his Mercedes years.
“The first photos, especially that iconic one of him standing in front of Enzo Ferrari’s house in his ‘Godfather’ suit. I told him, ‘For twelve years, I tried to get you to wear a suit and tie, and you did it on your first day at Ferrari.’ He laughed and replied, ‘I’m still not sure I look good in a jacket and tie.’ But it was a fantastic photo.” – he pointed out.
Despite now being rivals on the track, their deep friendship remains intact. There was always more between them than just a professional relationship: “We are still great friends. On a personal level, I wish him nothing but the best. But on track, I want to beat him.” – the Mercedes team principal concluded.
