Top speed analysis based on the data collected from the 2023 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne.
Top speeds:
In the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, the third round of the 2023 championship, which was held at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, the Drag Reduction System was worth 18.9km/h on average. A more detailed analysis of the DRS impact can be found here.
Average Top Speed:
-328.9km/h with the Drag Reduction System
-311.7kmh without DRS (310.0km/h removing the data for Charles Leclerc)
Highest top speeds: 340km/h for both Esteban Ocon (Alipine) and Sergio Perez (Red Bull), which were very low-drag cars that most of the time were running under DRS and tow
Australian Grand DRS efficiency compared in the graph above.
Efficiency means maximum speed with DRS divided by the maximum speed without DRS
Surprisingly McLaren was the with the best DRS, while the Red Bull RB19 was only second. The Ferrari SF-23 DRS efficiency was better then the Mercedes W14, while Williams was the least also in this ranking.
Sergio Perez reached 341km/h with a medium-high downforce package but what is even more impressive is that he averaged 333km/h on his 15 fastest laps. Esteban Ocon was very fast as well: low drag and frequent tows are responsible for this.
Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton reached the lowest top speeds because of rare DRS and tow in the race
The stats also seem to imply that the Mercedes power unit has as much of an issue as the heavy drag, while this Red Bull car will unfortunately reach astronautical speeds at the Baku City Circuit in Azerbaijan.
