After an extended 25-race wait, Lewis Hamilton finally returned to the Formula 1 podium as a Ferrari driver at the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix, ending a long drought and reasserting his status as one of the sport’s all-time greats.
The race itself was a spectacle, with Ferrari briefly appearing capable of securing their first win since the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton delivered a sensational start off the line, overtaking Andrea Kimi Antonelli into the first corner and immediately demonstrating his renewed pace and confidence in the SF-26.
Although Kimi Antonelli ultimately claimed his maiden Grand Prix victory, Lewis Hamilton engaged in a thrilling battle with his teammate Charles Leclerc for the final spot on the podium, emerging victorious. Last season, Leclerc had clearly established himself as Ferrari’s lead driver, but in this new generation of cars, Hamilton appears more at ease and significantly more competitive.
Former Formula E star Sam Bird attributed Lewis Hamilton’s resurgence to a key personnel change within the Ferrari garage. Speaking to Harry Benjamin on the Chequered Flag Podcast, Bird noted that the 41-year-old driver now appears rejuvenated and highly motivated.
Bird explained that the personnel switch has allowed the seven-time F1 world champion to gel better with his race engineer and the wider Ferrari team. This renewed synergy has translated into improved confidence on track, with Lewis Hamilton navigating the complex 2026 car more effectively than in previous seasons. Bird added that the change had been crucial in helping Lewis Hamilton “find his feet” again, signaling a potential return to the form that made him a seven-time world champion.
In addition to the engineering improvements, Lewis Hamilton highlighted the personal enjoyment he has rediscovered in racing this year. He described the Chinese Grand Prix as one of the most enjoyable races he has experienced in recent memory. The battle with Charles Leclerc for the final podium spot was characterized by tight, fair wheel-to-wheel action that showcased Ferrari’s competitive potential this season. The Briton immediately praised Antonelli after the race, recognizing the Italian driver’s breakthrough performance and sportsmanship.
Hamilton also remarked on the progress Ferrari have made, acknowledging that while the team is not yet in a position to challenge Mercedes at the front, the SF-26 provides a strong platform for further development. He emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum and continuing to push the car’s limits, expressing optimism that Ferrari can narrow the gap to the Silver Arrows in upcoming races.
The dynamic between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc is also proving promising for the Scuderia. Leclerc has rarely been beaten by a teammate in Formula 1, having only lost to Carlos Sainz in 2021 by a slim margin in points. With Lewis Hamilton now consistently challenging Leclerc in qualifying and during races, Ferrari could be on the verge of an intra-team rivalry that pushes both drivers to perform at their peak. Should the team continue improving, this renewed competition may set the stage for a potential championship fight later in the 2026 season.
The Chinese Grand Prix has therefore confirmed that Lewis Hamilton has rediscovered his rhythm at Ferrari. Between the new personnel dynamics, his growing comfort with the 2026 regulations, and his competitive battles with Charles Leclerc, the seven-time world champion appears ready to make a serious challenge for race wins and podiums this season.
