The key signing Ferrari needed to reignite its golden era with Lewis Hamilton. Ferrari faces pressure after a winless 2025 season.

Ferrari Faces Intense Pressure Heading into the 2026 Formula 1 Season

Ferrari enters the 2026 Formula 1 season under significant scrutiny after a disappointing 2025 campaign, where the team failed to secure a single race victory. With six races remaining in the current season, it has become increasingly clear that Ferrari is struggling to compete consistently with rivals Red Bull, Mercedes, and McLaren. Any realistic hopes of finishing second in the Constructors’ Championship appear to be slipping away rapidly, leaving fans and insiders questioning the team’s strategy and performance.

When Lewis Hamilton joined Ferrari, there was a renewed sense of optimism that the team might at least challenge for one championship this season. However, a risky decision to overhaul the car concept during the winter months backfired, leaving the team in a reactive position and chasing solutions rather than setting the pace. By Ferrari’s historically high standards, the current SF25 has fallen short, underperforming in areas that were expected to be strengths.

SF25 Updates Fail to Meet Driver Expectations

One of the critical missteps highlighted this season involves Ferrari installing updates to the SF25 that disregarded the preferences of their drivers. These changes have resulted in a car that struggles to respond to set-up adjustments, frustrating both Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. The issues were especially apparent during the Singapore Grand Prix, where the Briton faced a late brake failure and challenging race conditions. Despite these setbacks, Hamilton publicly supported the team, emphasizing his commitment to overcoming the ongoing technical difficulties and maintaining morale within the garage.

The Missed Opportunity: Adrian Newey

Another significant factor in Ferrari’s current challenges is the team’s inability to secure the expertise of legendary F1 designer Adrian Newey. According to motorsport analysts, Newey’s involvement could have helped restore Ferrari’s historic dominance and returned the team to its celebrated ‘glory days.’ However, logistical and cultural factors, such as relocation and personal commitments, made it difficult to convince him to leave the UK and join the Italian squad. Newey ultimately opted to remain with Aston Martin, reinforcing that Ferrari’s attempt to lure top engineering talent is not straightforward.

Former driver and pundit Robert Doornbos explained that Ferrari’s peak eras were often influenced by British engineering structures integrated within the Italian team. While Ferrari has an iconic identity, the combination of Italian heritage with certain British technical approaches historically contributed to success. Convincing top engineers like Newey to relocate to Italy presents numerous personal and professional challenges, which explains why the team was unable to secure his talents despite the attractive proposition.

Lessons from Singapore and Technical Struggles

The Singapore Grand Prix highlighted Ferrari’s ongoing difficulties with the SF25. Lewis Hamilton and the team had hoped that smooth, low-speed corners would alleviate the car’s persistent understeer issues. Unfortunately, the updates failed to resolve the problem, leaving engineers and drivers searching for answers. Ferrari’s technical department faces a steep learning curve as they attempt to balance driver feedback with the limitations of the current car, all while preparing for the upcoming 2026 regulations.

Focus Shifts to the 2026 F1 Regulations

With the current season winding down, it is expected that Ferrari’s focus will soon pivot entirely to the 2026 Formula 1 regulations. Historically, the Scuderia has demonstrated an ability to capitalize on regulation changes, often emerging stronger after periods of underperformance. Past examples include their transformation after the 2016 season, where they failed to win a single race but returned as serious title contenders in 2017 following the introduction of larger, heavier cars. Similarly, after a difficult 2021 season, Ferrari started the 2022 campaign with two victories, signaling the team’s ability to bounce back when given sufficient development time.

Strategic Advantages Heading into 2026

Looking ahead, Ferrari is positioned to take advantage of a focused development cycle. The combination of Lewis Hamilton’s championship-winning experience and Charles Leclerc’s youthful talent offers a balanced driver lineup capable of challenging at the front. The team’s struggles in 2025, while disappointing, have provided a rare opportunity to concentrate on long-term technical upgrades and strategic improvements. If lessons are applied effectively, Ferrari could return to the forefront of Formula 1 competition and mount a genuine championship challenge in 2026.

Despite a challenging season, Ferrari’s prospects for 2026 remain promising. The team has learned valuable lessons from the SF25’s limitations, the missed chance to secure Adrian Newey, and the challenges of balancing car development with driver preferences. With a clear focus on the next generation of F1 regulations and a strong driver lineup featuring Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, Ferrari has the potential to reclaim its position among the sport’s elite.
