How Charles Leclerc is gaining the most from Lewis Hamilton’s hidden influence at Ferrari
Lewis Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari has proven far more difficult than he initially anticipated. After leaving Mercedes in search of a fresh challenge and a return to success, the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion has faced one of the toughest starts of his career in Maranello. Despite his efforts to adapt, it is teammate Charles Leclerc who appears to be reaping the greatest benefits from Hamilton’s arrival at the Scuderia.
Hamilton had hoped that 2025 would mark a new chapter after the frustrations of his final seasons at Mercedes. Instead, the ground-effect generation of cars has continued to expose his discomfort, particularly with the SF-25’s persistent balance problems. Ferrari’s car has been hampered all year by ride height issues, while Hamilton himself has consistently battled understeer and struggled to control the rear of the machine. During the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the Briton urged Ferrari for solutions as he once again found the SF-25 difficult to handle across the race distance.
Behind the scenes, Hamilton has been working relentlessly to push Ferrari forward. Reports suggest he has provided the team with private documentation, outlining operational improvements and performance strategies. While his efforts have yet to bring him personal success, they have coincided with Leclerc flourishing within the team environment. The Monegasque driver has taken advantage of the stability Hamilton brings, outpacing him in qualifying and collecting all of Ferrari’s podium finishes so far this season.
Charles Leclerc’s adaptability to Ferrari’s operations has been evident. Over one lap, the 27-year-old has maintained his reputation as one of the fastest drivers in Formula 1. In contrast, Hamilton has struggled to unlock the full potential of the SF-25, further underlining the contrasting fortunes of Ferrari’s two drivers in 2025. Yet Ferrari principal Fred Vasseur has pointed out that Hamilton’s presence has, in some ways, eased the pressure on Leclerc. The winter announcement of Hamilton’s blockbuster move brought global attention to Maranello, but the spotlight has since shifted, allowing Leclerc to quietly strengthen his standing within the team.
The hidden impact of Hamilton’s behind-the-scenes work
According to analysis on FOX Sports MX, motorsport journalist Diego Mejía and former IndyCar driver Mario Domínguez argued that Hamilton’s behind-the-scenes efforts have indirectly boosted Leclerc’s performances. Domínguez explained that Hamilton, after years of triumph, may no longer carry the same hunger as when he first entered Formula 1. Meanwhile, Leclerc, still chasing his first world title, has been motivated to raise his game, spurred on by Hamilton’s arrival and the challenge of proving himself against one of the sport’s greatest champions.
Mejía added that Charles Leclerc has become the main beneficiary of Hamilton’s impact on Ferrari. He compared the current situation to earlier eras in Maranello’s history, when figures such as Luca di Montezemolo faced criticism for focusing more on headline-grabbing announcements than on strengthening Ferrari’s internal leadership. Hamilton’s transfer has once again raised questions about whether Ferrari is more invested in grand gestures than addressing deeper structural weaknesses.
Leclerc taking advantage of the opportunity
Leclerc himself has not been surprised by the Briton’s arrival, nor has he been overawed by sharing a garage with a seven-time World Champion. Instead, he has treated the situation as a learning experience, extracting as much knowledge as possible while continuing to establish himself as Ferrari’s strongest performer. With seven races remaining in the 2025 season, Leclerc sits 44 points ahead of Hamilton in the drivers’ championship and has secured consistent results that underline his progress.
For Hamilton, the outlook is less positive. Without a podium so far this year—including Sprint events—the Briton is at risk of becoming the first Ferrari driver since Kimi Räikkönen in 2014 to complete a season without a top-three finish. More significantly, he is in danger of ending a calendar year without a single podium for the first time in his illustrious career. Such an outcome would mark a historic low point and highlight the scale of the challenge he faces at Ferrari.
Hamilton’s fight to turn the tide
Compounding Hamilton’s problems is what insiders describe as a recurring “temperature management” issue, something that has troubled him throughout his time in Maranello. Combined with his difficulty in matching Leclerc’s raw pace, this has further widened the gap between the two Ferrari teammates. Sky Sports analyst Martin Brundle has suggested that Hamilton may have accepted, at least temporarily, that Leclerc holds the advantage in qualifying and race pace.
Nevertheless, Hamilton remains determined to end the 2025 season on a stronger note. With the sweeping regulation changes set to arrive in 2026, the Briton is keen to build momentum and ensure Ferrari is better positioned for the new era. His relentless pursuit of improvement, even when results have not matched expectations, continues to shape the culture inside Maranello—and may yet deliver long-term benefits for both himself and the Scuderia.
While Charles Leclerc currently stands as the main beneficiary of Lewis Hamilton’s struggles, the dynamic between the two Ferrari drivers could shift as the team continues its push to close the gap to Red Bull and McLaren. Whether the Briton can reclaim the upper hand remains one of the most fascinating narratives of the 2025 Formula 1 season.
