Formula 1 racing is an adrenaline-fuelled sport and one of the key elements that add to the excitement of each race is the intense rivalries that exist between drivers and teams.
For fans and drivers alike, these rivalries add an extra layer to the already exciting world of Formula 1 and can even have some influence on the outcome of some races.
But it goes much further than that. Interestingly, the rivalries also have a significant impact on the odds offered by bookmakers on Formula 1 World Championship races because, as tensions between drivers and teams increase, the odds of one coming out on top change dramatically.
Lewis Hamilton vs. Max Verstappen
The rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen started in the 2021 season when both drivers were battling for the top spot in the drivers’ championship. In this season, they had many on-track battles and even collided on multiple occasions during the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, as well as colliding on four other occasions.
Most of the collisions took place in the 2021 season, but extended into the penultimate round of the 2022 season in a race that had been dominated by Verstappen and Hamilton no longer had a chance of leading and colliding again in the São Paulo Grand Prix that Russell would eventually win.
One of the most memorable moments of this rivalry came during the United States Grand Prix, when Verstappen called Hamilton a “stupid idiot” and brought the relationship to an irreconcilable point.
Verstappen, who has just equalled Alonso in number of pole positions, acknowledges his respect for Hamilton and the achievements he has made on the track, despite not understanding the reason that there is such a bad feeling between them.
Lando Norris vs. Charles Leclerc
Norris and Leclerc are two young drivers in Formula 1 and have been involved in a number of on-track incidents that have led to a rivalry between them.
At the 2022 São Paulo Grand Prix, Norris collided with Leclerc in the opening minutes of the race, causing Leclerc to lose control and crash into the track barrier. Norris defended himself by saying that he was not the only one at fault, but received a five-second penalty.
Despite these incidents, both have been seen playing golf off the track, in the company of drivers such as Alex Albon and George Russell. However, Charles Leclerc has expressed frustration at their on-track rivalry.
It is worth noting that Lando Norris is known to have a good relationship with his team-mates in the F1 Championship. And while these incidents have caused tension and frustration between the two, there is no indication that the rivalry transcends beyond the tracks on which they compete.
Lewis Hamilton vs. Nico Rosberg
Hamilton and Rosberg were childhood friends and kart racing teammates when they both dreamed of racing against each other in Formula 1. The dream came true in 2013 when they both joined the Mercedes team, becoming teammates and strong contenders for the F1 title.
It didn’t take long for the rivalry between the two to intensify as they competed in the 2014 championship due to their driving styles and off-track tensions. This rivalry produced several memorable moments including close races, collisions and near misses; even off-track incidents that would end up straining the relationship between the two and the Mercedes team.
The tension increased between them at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, when the two drivers collided on the first lap of the race and had to retire from the track. This incident highlighted the intensity of the rivalry. However, despite all the incidents, Hamilton has said that he believes this “rivalry” was healthy for Formula 1.
Ferrari vs. McLaren
Rivalries in Formula 1 are not limited to drivers. In fact, one of the most iconic and enduring rivalries in motorsport history is between the Ferrari and McLaren teams.
Both teams have a history of success in Formula 1, with championships, legendary drivers and a rivalry that has given us several memorable moments over several decades. In 2007, the rivalry escalated further when McLaren was accused of obtaining confidential data from Ferrari, leading to a major scandal that would become known as Spygate and end with a $100 million fine for McLaren and their exclusion from the championship that season.
In recent seasons, this rivalry seems to be less intense and both teams focus on competing against the dominance of Mercedes. However, in the 2021 season the two teams shared a podium for the first time in seven seasons, suggesting that we could see signs of improvement and competitiveness fuel the rivalry between the two as the Formula 1 calendar progresses.
