The 2021 Formula 1 season is underway with the presentation of the new cars, as we are waiting for Ferrari to launch it’s SF21. The Italian side will only remove the veils from the SF21 on 10 March, two days before the pre-season testing session that will be held in Bahrain at the Sakhir track.
Maranello is, without mincing words, the team on which the spotlight will be on in 2021. In fact, the lackluster performances of the last season are still fresh in everyone’s memory, as the SF1000 took only three podium finishes (two with Charles Leclerc and one with Sebastian Vettel) not going beyond sixth place in the constructors’ championship. A disappointing result that hasn’t been seen since 1980.
The SF21 will be, given the rules almost unchanged pending the big regulatory change, an evolution of the SF1000 on which a brand new engine will be mounted compared to the poor one (due to the known events of which we are aware) of last year. But will the new cavalry be enough to allow Ferrari to get back on track? As always, it will be necessary to wait for the circuit feedback that will show whether or not a technical project is good.
Yes, the technical aspect. Another area where Ferrari has been worked hard, having spent the two development tokens available on the rear of the car making it more stable and less grumpy than in 2020. These are the cards that Ferrari will play to get back on top. Between waiting and redemption, the sporting resurrection by the Maranello team is expected, as Ferrari is called to give answers.
The competition (McLaren, Aston Martin, Alpine) will certainly not stand and watch, with the fight for the lowest step of the world championship podium that promises to be close and exciting behind the Mercedes-Red Bull duo who at the moment appears unreachable, but for Ferrari this year will an important “game”. Very important. Another 2020 is absolutely not contemplable. 2021 must represent that springboard towards that new era of Formula One where, at least on paper, the top teams and not only should – the conditional is more than ever a must in these cases – start close together.
The hope of seeing a better car is there, now it’s up to Ferrari to confirm the hope that all of us Ferrari fans have.
