On 28 February 1975, qualifying took place for the South African Grand Prix, the third round of the season.
Scuderia Ferrari was debuting the new 312 T, having run the first two races with the 312 B3-74, from the previous year, without much success. It took two four places with Clay Regazzoni and a sixth and a fifth for Lauda. In the new car, Laud was fourth on the grid, four tenths off pole, set by Carlos Pace in the Brabha, while Regazzoni would start from ninth. The race was not brilliant, as the Swiss driver retired and Lauda was fifth. However, within Ferrari it was felt the car had potential.
The 312 T went through another transition race in Spain, but as from the next race, in Monaco, it demonstrated, especially in Lauda’s case, all its true potential. As from Monaco (see photo) Lauda strung together a run of four wins and a second place which put him clearly at the top of the points table. At the end of the year, an eleven year drought in terms of championship titles ,came to an end for the Scuderia.
