Ferrari Driver Academy member and Haas F1 driver Mick Schumacher has talked about the advice that he received as an aspiring driver by his legendary father, who remains the most influential figure in the world of motorsport.
Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher now resides in Switzerland and has been out of the public eye since 2013 due to a tragic skiing incident that left him in a coma. Very few information has been revealed about Michael Schumacher’s health since that moment, and the family of the seven-time Formula 1 world champion has of course every right to protect his privacy. The only few updates have been provided by Former Ferrari team principal and chief executive officer Jean Todt.
The iconic seven-time Formula 1 champion’s son Mick, who joined the Ferrari Driver Academy back in 2019 and has raced for Haas in the last two F1 championships, is now fighting for his future in the sport. His current deal with the American deal is available only until the end of the 2022 season and it seems that Haas is not willing to extend his contract, which means that a place on the 2023 Formula 1 grid is in doubt at this stage:
“You have to ask [Haas team principal Guenther Steiner], I guess,” Mick Schumacher said on Thursday in an interview for Sky at Monza, ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, as the Ferrari junior was once again questioned about his future.
Ferrari reserve driver Antonio Giovinazzi will get the opportunity to drive today at Monza, in the first free practice session for the Italian Grand Prix, replacing Mick behind the wheel of the Haas car. This led to speculation that the Maranello team could decide to ask Haas to replace Mick with the Italian driver for the next F1 campaign.
In a recent interview for Spanish nationwide daily sports newspaper published in Barcelona, Mundo Deportivo, Mick Schumacher opened up about how Michael helped him reach Formula 1:
My father was always very supportive of everything I was doing in karting. I think he tried to give me different approaches to see what was best for me, and in the end, he always told me: ‘do what you love’. And for me, what I have loved the most has always been racing. I have always loved what I have done and every time I went to more major events, bigger races and for me it was always very nice that he occupied his time being with me always in the motorhome, discussing racing. They were good times.” – the Ferrari junior said, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.

Asked whether it is difficult to be the son of a legend, given the constant comparisons and high expectations, Mick replied: “No. It’s not difficult. It’s something that motivates me. It is very nice to have pressure that nobody else has and I have always carried it. I love being compared to my father, in this case, the best driver in the world.” – he explained.
The Ferrari Driver Academy member also wanted to point out that “I can work under pressure – not many drivers can”.
