The power unit of Charles Leclerc’s SF21 car that got damaged on lap 1 of the Hungarian Grand Prix unfortunately can’t be used again, which means that the Monegasque driver will get his third power unit at the Spa-Francorchamps this weekend. The announced Ferrari engine upgrade will be introduced later with the 4th power unit resulting in grid penalties for both drivers.
On the other hard, Carlos Sainz can breathe a sigh of relief: his power unit that got replaced during the Hungarian Grand Prix can be still used. There was a problem with the turbocharger, which the Italian side couldn’t solve at the track, but a thorough analysis back at the Maranello factory showed that it’s fixable.
As reported by German automobile magazine ‘Auto Motor und Sport’, Ferrari still has one development token left for the engine, since not all six tokens were used in the winter. Three quarters of their engine package was new, while one quarter a takeover from the 2020 Formula 1 season season. The positive news is that the test bench for this upgraded engine is showing great results.
However, the debut of the upgraded Ferrari engine in the Belgian Grand Prix weekend was unfortunately too early, because the new parts are still in production. Ferrari is now looking for a race in which you can get over a starting place penalty and still have enough GPs in the remaining calendar to take advantage of the progress. It could be the deciding wildcard in the battle for third place against McLaren.
