Telemetry analysis between Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc’s lap times with the low and high rear wings in Baku shows the massive improvement by Ferrari, as explained by F1DataAnalysis:
The wing was introduced in FP2: a quick look at the telemetry shows the significant improvement in Vmax and high-speed acceleration.
After each corner, the speed traces are very close up to 200km/h: after that, the two diverge with a significant acceleration advantage for the new wing
- The faster the speed, the higher the drag and consequently the acceleration improvement
-Look at the delta on straights!
But how significant is the drag reduction?
-The top speed increased by 7km/h, which is 2.2%.
-The top speed and the drag are linked by a third power, so the drag is around 6.5% lower with the new wing – Remember the 9% higher Ferr drag compared to RB?
But how do the two different setups compare on the minisectors?
-The new setup is faster in over 95% of the lap (but, with -2.3s/lap, the track conditions and fuel loads could be different)
-Still, the higher-DF wing makes the car faster in some slow corners (not all)
This is the upgrade that Ferrari needed. The car is well balanced and able to quickly adapt. This wing minimises the top speed deficit, with possibly no major grip loss.
