Let’s take a look at what F1 GPS data from the 2023 Bahrain GP qualifying tells us about Red Bull, Scuderia Ferrari and Aston Martin:
Speed (top)
Longitudinal grip (mid)
Lateral grip (bottom)
Based on this analysis we can clearly see that Scuderia Ferrari has traded lateral grip for better straight-line performance. On the other hand, Aston Martin has unmatched grip. But overall, the Red Bull RB19 car has the best compromise.
How did the gap between the front runners create? Scuderia Ferrari reduced its gap to RB in the straight (line trending downwards). Charles Leclerc lost all the pole position in the first corner! The Aston Martin was quite draggy, losing time to Red Bull and especially Ferrari on every straight
The Aston Martin car is really a downforce monster! Fernando Alonso could lift the throttle and brake the latest of them all, and he also braked for the least time. He also braked the least before the second corner considered and reached the highest lateral acceleration values
The top three teams are very close grip-wise! Scuderia errari had the lowest lateral grip but good braking. It would have been impossible to have predicted this last season, but Aston Martin had the best cornering performance of them all! Red Bull had the best cornering/braking/top-speed compromise
