Fred Vasseur could secure his Ferrari future for 2027 by guiding the team to second place in the Constructors’ Championship, according to Sky Sports F1 reporter Ted Kravitz. The Ferrari team principal is facing another wave of speculation after Christian Horner publicly expressed interest in taking charge at Maranello.
Horner has been linked with Ferrari before, but his latest comments represent a significant shift because he has now openly presented the Scuderia as a destination he would consider. The former Red Bull boss has even indicated that he would be prepared to abandon his previous requirement for an ownership stake if Ferrari offered him the position, removing one potential obstacle to a move.
Ted Kravitz believes Ferrari P2 could secure Fred Vasseur’s future
Ferrari entered 2026 as an outsider in both championship battles, but the recent acknowledgement that its title challenge has effectively fallen away has increased scrutiny on Vasseur. Both Ferrari drivers are now more than 100 points behind Kimi Antonelli in the Drivers’ Championship, while the Scuderia trails Mercedes by 160 points in the Constructors’ standings.
Despite that deficit, Ted Kravitz believes the battle for second place could prove decisive for the Frenchman’s future. Ferrari strengthened its advantage over third-placed McLaren to 72 points in Baku, although Red Bull also made progress after a double podium, reducing the gap to 115 points.
Kravitz’s assessment is that retaining second in the Constructors’ Championship would be enough to secure Vasseur’s position. At the same time, he acknowledged that Christian Horner’s public interest inevitably increases the pressure because Ferrari now has a proven championship-winning figure openly associating himself with the role.
The evolving situation can be viewed alongside Christian Horner’s willingness to consider Ferrari without an equity stake, which has made the possibility of a future approach easier to contemplate.
Ferrari’s recent form is increasing the pressure
The issue for Fred Vasseur is not simply Ferrari’s championship position, but the direction of the team’s form. The Scuderia has now gone five consecutive races without a podium and has lost ground to several rivals since the Belgian Grand Prix.
Over that period Ferrari has scored 93 points, compared with 180 for Mercedes, 112 for Red Bull and 111 for McLaren. Those numbers underline why the mood has changed even though Ferrari remains second in the Constructors’ Championship.
Before the summer break, the Maranello team had established itself as Mercedes’ closest challenger. More recently, however, its competitive trajectory has raised the possibility that Ferrari has fallen to fourth in the performance order behind Mercedes, Red Bull and McLaren.
The championship implications can be followed through the ScuderiaFans F1 Championship Points Calculator, particularly as Ferrari tries to defend second place while its rivals continue to close the gap.
Christian Horner adds another layer to Ferrari succession talk
Christian Horner’s availability has made the discussion around Vasseur more complicated. The former Red Bull team principal had previously been associated with Ferrari, but his public willingness to join the Scuderia gives those links greater weight than before.
That development comes at a time when Ferrari’s focus is increasingly shifting towards what happens in 2027. With the current title challenge fading, the team’s leadership and technical direction are likely to receive even greater attention as the season moves towards its conclusion.
Kravitz believes Horner’s comments naturally increase pressure on the current team principal, even if Ferrari ultimately retains its present structure. The existence of a high-profile alternative means every result will be assessed against both Ferrari’s championship objectives and the wider debate over who should lead the next phase of the project.
Fred Vasseur still has a contract with Ferrari
Any change would also have contractual implications. Fred Vasseur signed an extension last season, meaning Ferrari would likely need to compensate him if it chose to terminate the agreement before its scheduled conclusion.
Italian media reports have nevertheless suggested that Ferrari is preparing contingency options in case Vasseur decides voluntarily to step away at the end of the season. His public behaviour, however, has indicated that he remains inclined to continue rather than walk away from the role.
The situation therefore remains open rather than settled. Ferrari still holds second place in the Constructors’ Championship, and Kravitz believes maintaining that position would be enough to protect the team principal heading into 2027. But with recent performance slipping and Christian Horner now openly interested in Maranello, the final races of the season could carry consequences extending well beyond the championship table.
