Everything you need to know about one of the most important and strategic roles in the Formula 1 paddock.
In the fast-paced and highly competitive world of Formula 1, the team principal is the key figure who leads and manages an entire racing team. This individual is effectively the “boss” of the team, overseeing day-to-day operations and bearing ultimate responsibility for the team’s performance on the track. But what does a team principal actually do? And who are the current team principals leading the Formula 1 grid in the 2025 season? Let’s take a closer look.
The Role of a Team Principal in Modern Formula 1
In the early decades of Formula 1, team principals were often the team founders, chief designers, or even former drivers. Think of iconic names like Colin Chapman at Lotus or Jack Brabham running his own team. Today, however, the role has evolved significantly. Team principals are now typically experienced professional managers, often appointed by major automotive groups or large corporate entities.
Modern team principals no longer build the cars themselves or participate directly in racing activities. Instead, they guide the team from a strategic, managerial, and political standpoint. They are the face of the team in dealings with the media, the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile), sponsors, and rival teams. They are also responsible for shaping the internal culture of the organization, hiring key personnel, and coordinating the work of various technical and operational departments.

Red Bull Racing – Laurent Mekies
Formerly an aerodynamic engineer, Laurent Mekies brings over 25 years of experience in motorsport. After working with the FIA and later serving as sporting director at Scuderia Ferrari, he returned in 2024 to Red Bull’s junior team (Racing Bulls). In 2025, he succeeded Christian Horner to become just the second team principal in Red Bull Racing’s history.
Racing Bulls – Alan Permane
A veteran of Formula 1 since 1989, Alan Permane has held positions with Benetton, Renault, and Alpine. Following a brief stint as sporting director at the Red Bull junior team, he stepped up as team principal of Racing Bulls in 2025.
Alpine – Steve Nielsen
Steve Nielsen took over from Oliver Oakes after the 2025 Miami Grand Prix. With nearly four decades of experience in Formula 1, Nielsen has worked for historic teams including Lotus, Tyrrell, and Honda, and helped Renault secure championship titles in 2005 and 2006. Known for his technical knowledge and diplomatic skills, he is highly respected throughout the paddock.
Kick Sauber – Jonathan Wheatley
After serving 18 years as sporting director at Red Bull Racing, Jonathan Wheatley was appointed team principal of Sauber in April 2025. He is now leading the transition of the Swiss-based team ahead of its official transformation into the Audi works team in 2026.
Aston Martin – Andy Cowell
Former head of Mercedes High Performance Powertrains, Andy Cowell joined Aston Martin in 2024 as CEO and became team principal in 2025. His vast technical expertise is seen as fundamental to the ambitious goals of the Silverstone-based team.
Haas – Ayao Komatsu
Ayao Komatsu made history as the first Japanese team principal in Formula 1. After years of experience as a race engineer, he took over the helm of the American outfit in 2024, replacing Günther Steiner following a difficult season.
Scuderia Ferrari – Frédéric Vasseur
Frédéric Vasseur previously enjoyed success in the junior categories, including launching the career of Lewis Hamilton. He managed Renault and Alfa Romeo before taking over at Ferrari in 2023. Under his leadership, Scuderia Ferrari became competitive once again, finishing second in the constructors’ standings in 2024.
McLaren – Andrea Stella
An Italian engineer with a long history at Ferrari, Andrea Stella has been McLaren’s team principal since 2023. After a highly promising debut season, he led the British team to the constructors’ championship title in 2024, ending a title drought that had lasted since 1998.
Williams – James Vowles
A long-serving strategist at Mercedes, James Vowles took over leadership of Williams in 2023. Within just one year, he lifted the team from the bottom of the standings to seventh place. Known for his data-driven approach, he is one of the youngest and most technically-minded leaders on the grid.
Mercedes – Toto Wolff
Team principal and co-owner of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, Toto Wolff has been in charge since 2013, holding a 33% stake in the team. He was the architect of Mercedes’ hybrid era dominance, overseeing multiple titles with drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg between 2014 and 2021. He is also married to Susie Wolff, former racing driver and now head of the F1 Academy program.
The Strategic Heart of Every Team
In a sport as technologically advanced and fiercely contested as Formula 1, the team principal is far more than just a manager. This figure acts as the strategic brain of the team, the unifying force behind every department, and often a visionary leader capable of shaping the direction and culture of the entire operation.
By 2025, Formula 1 teams are more structured and corporatized than ever before. This makes strong leadership even more critical. The individuals listed above are not just names on a team sheet—they are the people shaping the future of the sport, one decision at a time.
