Stefano Domenicali, the Italian manager and current CEO of Formula One Group, replacing Chase Carey, has confirmed that he attempted to bring Lewis Hamilton to Scuderia Ferrari earlier in his career.
The British driver started his Formula 1 career with McLaren 14 years ago and won a world title with them, before eventually moving to Mercedes ahead of Formula 1’s turbo-hybrid era, which proved to be a very inspired move given the fact that Mercedes completely dominated since then, giving him the opportunity to win several titles.
In 2007 Stefano Domenicali took on the role of Director of the Ferrari Formula One team, a position previously held by Jean Todt and one year later became the Team Principal of the Italian side. He has now revealed that efforts were made in order for Ferrari to sign Lewis Hamilton, yet he did not want to provide further details regarding timeframes and the number of approaches.
In a recent interview for Sky Sports, Stefano Domenicali explained said: “To be honest, yes. This is true [about signing Hamilton]. We have discussed that.”
Lewis Hamilton recently opened up about his dream to drive for Ferrari and the likelihood of never driving for the Maranello team.
“It is a dream come true for every driver to drive for Ferrari but, for me, it was never to be and I don’t actually really know why not,” Hamilton said, as reported by Sky Sport Italy – “I wish Ferrari all the best, but I will try to keep them from world titles for a while!”

Stefano Domenicali added: “I think that the answer that Lewis was able to give is the right one. Today, I think that period has passed. There is a movie that for me sometimes is very important to remember: Sliding Doors. There are moments where if you don’t get into an elevator, you stay on the floor. I don’t know. That was the situation that Lewis lived in that specific time of his life. I think that [we] cannot blame his choice, at least, because he did an incredible career.” – he explained.
