A lot of “wrong reasoning” has been made concerning Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz, according to Formula 1 chief executive officer Stefano Domenicali. The Italian manager, without mincing words, speaks out on the future of the Prancing Horse. Following the one-two finish at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne, led by the superb performance of Carlos Sainz, who will leave the Maranello team at the end of the 2024 Formula 1 season, more than a few voices have questioned whether the decision made by Ferrari will prove to be successful.
The Australian Grand Prix not only told the story of a much desired and awaited victory. The Ferrari win, indeed, the Red triumph – with almost a parade finish – is certainly sweet news for the Prancing Horse and its fans. However, Carlos Sainz’s victory also raises some uncertainty: was it the right decision to sign Lewis Hamilton, now advancing in age?
“I understand the reasoning, but it’s a wrong reasoning – explains Stefano Domenicali, interviewed by Italian journalist Leo Turrini for Quotidiano Sportivo – Carlos [Sainz] is a great driver and it’s no coincidence that he’s the most discussed topic of the moment. He will find a placement that matches his qualities. But with Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari has made a great move, not just from a marketing perspective.”
The former Ferrari team principal is certain: Lewis Hamilton is not too old now. However, there will be a fundamental difference compared to the years of Michael Schumacher, the last seven-time world champion from Maranello: “Schumi was the absolute dominus, Irvine was openly a number two. Lewis will have to compete with someone like Charles Leclerc, who will never accept being a wingman.” – the former Ferrari boss pointed out.

There’s also a (confident) comment on the work of Frédéric Vasseur’s men, who have managed to propel the team forward: “In my opinion, they are working well in Maranello. Ferrari has taken a leap forward, has overtaken other teams, such as Mercedes. It’s important, it’s not a trivial detail.” – Stefano Domenicali concluded.
