Charles Leclerc Edges Ahead of Max Verstappen in 2025 Pace Battle, New Data Suggests
For years, Max Verstappen has been regarded as the fastest driver in modern Formula 1. With four consecutive World Championships under his belt and nearly a decade leading Red Bull Racing’s charge, his dominance has defined an era. But in the 2025 F1 season, Max Verstappen is encountering one of the most intense challenges of his career — one led not only by McLaren’s rising stars Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, but also by an increasingly formidable Charles Leclerc.
Despite securing two race victories so far this season, Max Verstappen currently trails Oscar Piastri by 49 points in the championship standings. A costly late-race incident at the Spanish Grand Prix robbed him of a potential 14 points, derailing what could have been a crucial recovery drive. Aside from that setback, the Dutchman has largely performed with his usual consistency, yet the margins at the top have grown razor-thin.
Red Bull may benefit from recent changes in technical regulations that have broadened the setup window of their RB21, making the car more manageable during sprint weekends where preparation time is limited. This development could ease the pressure on Max Verstappen during tightly scheduled events, giving him a better platform to perform.
Nonetheless, new data has cast a different light on the 2025 driver performance rankings. According to detailed analysis from the Italian website Autoracer, Charles Leclerc has emerged as the most precise and consistent driver on the grid. The Ferrari driver has averaged just 0.050 seconds off his theoretical ‘ideal’ lap time across the season — a metric calculated by combining each driver’s best sector times.
The Dutchman is close behind, averaging 0.056 seconds off perfection, while Oscar Piastri sits at 0.068 seconds. The fine margins underline how fiercely competitive the top three drivers have been — yet they also suggest that Charles Leclerc, in arguably a less dominant car, has maximized his machinery better than anyone else.
This data is a rare boost for Ferrari, whose 2025 campaign has been largely underwhelming. With Charles Leclerc demonstrating that he has the raw pace to compete for a world title, the team is reportedly preparing two major upgrade packages designed to unlock more performance. These updates could be pivotal if Ferrari hopes to maintain its position near the front and close the gap to Red Bull and McLaren.
For Max Verstappen, the explanation for falling slightly behind the Monegasque in raw pace may lie in the limitations of his current car. Some observers believe he has been pushing beyond the RB21’s comfort zone in an effort to compensate — a theory supported by Red Bull’s questionable strategy calls in recent races, including a move made in “panic” during the last Grand Prix.
While Max Verstappen’s commitment remains unquestioned, speculation surrounding his future continues to grow. Guenther Steiner recently suggested that Verstappen could step in to replace Kimi Antonelli as early as 2026. With Mercedes and Aston Martin both keeping close tabs on the reigning champion, a departure from Red Bull is not entirely out of the question.
However, such a move would represent a monumental shift. Leaving Red Bull, the team built around him, carries significant risk and no certainty of better results elsewhere. Much will depend on how the remainder of the 2025 season unfolds. If Red Bull continues to falter and Verstappen remains off the top step more often than on it, the Dutchman may be forced to reconsider his long-term loyalty.
