The first Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix took place back in August of 1986 and represented the culmination of Bernie Ecclestone’s wish for the sport to go beyond the Iron Curtain. He took into considering a race in Moscow, but eventually the initial Hungarian plan was for a race to be held on the streets of the capital Budapest. When planning complications put the brakes on that plan, the final location chosen would be a site 19km outside of the capital city, in Mogyoród. The Hungaroring circuit was completed in just eight months and the first race drew an estimated 200 000 fans from all over the Eastern Bloc. Just three years later, it would host one of its most memorable races.
During the 1989 Hungarian Grand Prix, Scuderia Ferrari driver Nigel Mansell was lapping two seconds fast than the field, helping him climb the order from 12th into victory contention.
A gripping battle between Mansell and Ayrton Senna ensued, with the Brazilian leading, and the Brit hot on his tail. In the final stages of the race, Senna hesitated while lapping the traffic, with the Ferrari driver opportunistically diving to the inside to take the lead, eventually taking the race win for the Maranello team by an impressive 25 seconds.
Hungary has held many other memorable events at the Hungaroring , including the 2007 Grand Prix, which featured an intense intra-team battle between Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. The Hungarian Grand Prix was considered a home away from home for Robert Kubica and his legion of fans during his two stints in Formula One. As the nearest Formula 1 venue to Poland, as many as 25,000 passionate Polish fans would come to the race every year to cheer on their hero.
But it’s not just tales of the past that make the Hungaroring a venue of interest. This is an event worth watching year in, year out.
There have been nine occasions on which a team has recorded a 1-2 finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The most recent was for Scuderia Ferrari five years ago, with Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen. The Maranello team have had the most 1-2 finishes at the Hungaroring, with four.
There have been fifteen different polesitters at the Hungaroring during the years. Mercedes Lewis Hamilton set a new record for most pole positions at the Hungarian Grand Prix last season, by taking his eighth pole position. On the other hand McLaren and Scuderia Ferrari are currently tied for the most pole positions for a team at the Hungaroring, with eight each.
