The Hermann Tilke-designed track is part of the multi-billion dollar Yas Island development, that also includes a marina, the well-known Ferrari World theme park, Yas Water World and the Du Arena concert venue. Shopping centers, golf courses and hotels have also been developed on the man-made island. A twenty-five kilometers square leisure Island built to promote tourism in Abu Dhabi. More than 1.3 billion dollars were spent constructing the most technologically-advanced circuit on the Formula 1 calendar

Arriving at the circuit is a breeze from the Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) which is at a distance of 10 km, (14-minute drive) while Dubai International Airport (DXB) is a bit further at a distance of 113 km (1 hr. 10-minute drive).

Abu Dhabi hosted the first Formula 1 Festival gratis in February 2007, showcasing the largest congregation of Formula 1 cars and drivers outside of a Grand Prix. During the festival it was announced that Abu Dhabi was officially on the Formula 1 calendar and would host Grand Prixes from 2009 until 2016.

The Yas Marina Circuit:
The original 5.554 km long design of the circuit (2009 -2020) included 21 corners, (an extremely tight hairpin 180⁰ left hander and quite a few sharp 90⁰ corners) a full throttle 1.14 kms long straight and a shorter fast half kilometer straight. This made Yas Marina a technically challenging track with 68 gear changes per lap. However, the layout did not offer too many passing chances, which meant that competitive wheel to wheel racing was missing most of the times, which led many to describe it as an unexciting experience for the drivers and fans.

As a result, organizers made some key changes: the track needed to be widened and average track speeds increased. Three major areas were modified: the North Hairpin, South Marina and Hotel section.

The Yas Marina Circuit, which has a capacity of 60,000, attracts more than 125,000 spectators over the course of the weekend, and became Formula One’s first twilight race when it made its debut in 2009, as the Yas Marina Circuit has played host to some iconic F1 moments right from the off.

There is yet to be a red-flagged race at the Yas Marina Circuit and every race at the track has reached its scheduled distance.

Ahead of this year’s event, there have been 718 racing laps completed at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The event is now firmly established as the final race of the season. The organisers agreed a new multi-year agreement to keep Abu Dhabi on the Formula 1 calendar for the foreseeable future.
